🌧️ DID YOU EXPERIENCE RAINFALL LAST NIGHT? IN AUGUST? 🤔

If you did, you may have wondered: What is happening with our weather?

August rainfall in Zambia is unusual in many areas, but let's be careful about what it actually tells us. There is something much bigger that farmers should be paying attention to. 🌍

EL NIÑO IS BACK — AND IT IS EXPECTED TO BE STRONG.

The 2026 El Niño is developing rapidly, and climate experts are warning of significant changes in rainfall patterns across Africa, including increased drought risk in parts of southern and central Africa.

For farmers, this means we should not wait for the first rains before we start planning.

Think of rainfall as a system. Water evaporates from the land and water bodies, rises into the atmosphere, condenses and eventually returns to the surface as precipitation. But whether that moisture actually produces useful rainfall depends on much more than simply how much moisture is in the sky.

Temperature, atmospheric pressure, winds, humidity and large-scale climate systems such as El Niño all influence when, where and how much rain we receive.

So that unexpected August rainfall?

I would call it proof that the coming season will most likely fail and I WOULD call it a reminder:

⚠️ THE WEATHER PATTERNS ARE CHANGING.

And as farmers, we need to be ready.

🌱 Start preparing your land early.
💧 Plan your water and irrigation.
🌾 Consider drought-tolerant crops and varieties such as sweet potato
📅 Plan your planting dates carefully.
🌱 Secure your planting material early.
📊 Follow reliable seasonal forecasts instead of waiting for the rains to tell you what to do.

Don't farm by hope alone. Farm by observation, information and preparation.

The farmer who prepares before the rain comes has an advantage over the farmer who starts preparing when everyone else is already planting.
