KABWE FIRE BRIGADE SWIFTLY RESCUES TODDLER FROM PIT LATRINE AND SAVES DOG FROM WELL

3rd August, 2026.

At 08:40 hours, the Kabwe Fire Brigade, led by Firefighter Lyato Arnold, responded to two separate rescue incidents involving a toddler trapped in a pit latrine and a dog that had fallen into a well.

The first incident occurred in Makululu Road 13, where Liam Nyirenda, a 1-year, 8-month-old boy, accidentally fell into a pit latrine. According to the child's mother, she was unaware of how the toddler had crawled out of her sight. The incident came to light when a person who had gone to bath heard the child crying from inside the pit latrine and immediately reported to the mother.

Upon arrival, the Kabwe Fire Brigade swiftly conducted a rescue operation and successfully retrieved the child alive. Inspector Mulenga of Kasanda Police Station and members of the public were present during the rescue.

In a separate incident, the Brigade responded to House No. 02, Uganda Avenue, belonging to Mr. Mallory Makusa (48), where a dog had fallen into a well. Firefighters successfully rescued the animal without injury.

The Kabwe Fire Brigade has urged members of the public to ensure that pit latrines are securely covered and kept closed at all times. The Brigade has also encouraged property owners to properly cover or fence off wells to prevent similar incidents involving children, animals, or other members of the community.

KABWE-NGABWE ROAD TO BE UPGRADED TO BITUMINOUS STANDARD

Road Development Agency (RDA) Director and Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Nelson Chuma, says the upgrading of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road to bituminous standard will stimulate economic activity by improving the movement of agricultural produce to markets and supporting mining, tourism, trade and investment in Central Province.

Eng. Chuma said the improved road infrastructure will also enhance access to schools, health facilities and other essential public services, ultimately improving the quality of life for communities in the province.

Speaking during the signing of the contracts today, Eng. Chuma described the development as another important milestone in the Government’s continued investment in strategic transport infrastructure.

Lot 1 involves the upgrading of approximately 75 kilometres of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road and 10 kilometres of selected urban roads in Kabwe District, Central Province. The works will be undertaken by Lushion Investment Limited in Joint Venture with Nchifar Enterprise under a 24-month contract.

Lot 2 covers the upgrading of approximately 80 kilometres of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road and 10 kilometres of selected urban roads in Ngabwe District, also under a 24-month contract.

“The award reflects the Government’s determination to accelerate the delivery of quality road infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves connectivity and enhances the livelihoods of our people,” Eng. Chuma said.

“The signing of this contract is a clear demonstration of the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s unwavering commitment to investing in infrastructure as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, regional integration and inclusive national development.”

Eng. Chuma noted that the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road is a strategic transport corridor linking Kabwe and Ngabwe districts, as well as surrounding communities.

“Once upgraded, this road will provide a reliable all-weather transport corridor that will significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower vehicle operating costs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nchifar Enterprise Managing Director Farai Mwanamakondo said the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road has deteriorated over many years and remained in poor condition.

“Road users have faced significant challenges, particularly during the rainy season, when some sections become difficult or completely impassable. The poor state of the road has disrupted the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods, while increasing transport costs and limiting economic opportunities in the region,” Mr. Mwanamakondo said.

And Lumandwe Resources Director Onno Munshya thanked the Government and the RDA for the opportunity to participate in the project.

“We will not take this opportunity for granted and are committed to delivering the project to the highest standards,” Mr. Munshya said.

KABWE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL VACCINATES 530 DOGS AND REGISTERS 432.

Kabwe Municipal Council, through the Livestock and Veterinary Services Department, has vaccinated a total of 530 dogs and registered 432 dogs since the exercise started a month ago.

The Livestock and Veterinary Services and Kabwe Municipal Council Public Health Department embarked on the dog registration and vaccination exercise at the end of June, 2026 in accordance with the law.

The Livestock and Veterinary department vaccinated 200 dogs in Makululu, 88
Natuseko , 68 dogs in Kang'omba, 66 in
Mukobeko , 52 in Kamushanga , 31 in Bwacha, 25 dogs in Kawama and Nakoli 8 dogs.

All dogs were vaccinated against rabies.

The Local Authority has also registered a total of 432 dogs since the inception of the exercise.

Kabwe Municipal Council wishes to inform the general public that it is mandatory for members of the public to register and vaccinate their dogs against rabies.

The Dog Registration in Urban is at K70, Peri-Urban K50, Rural at K20 per dog while Vaccination is at K50 per dog in Urban/Peri-Urban, K30 per dog in Rural areas

The vaccination and registration exercise is coming to an end this week. Members of the public who have not yet registered and vaccinated their dogs are advised to do so before the exercise ends.
