‎GOVERNMENT COMMENDS LEARNERS' ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY COMMEMORATIONS
‎
‎As part of its 2026 World Environment Day commemorations, Mansa Municipal Council conducted climate change debates involving four schools.
‎
‎In the first debate, Mutende Combined School (proposing) emerged victorious over St. Clements Secondary School (opposing) on the motion, "Are public awareness campaigns the most effective way to promote conservation?"
‎
‎Don Bosco Secondary School (proposing) defeated Praise Christian School (opposing) in the second debate on the topic, "Are governments doing enough to fight climate change?"
‎
‎The two winning schools later competed in an environmental quiz, with Mutende Combined School emerging as the overall winner.
‎
‎Meanwhile, Government has expressed delight at the active participation of learners in the World Environment Day commemorations.
‎
‎Speaking in a speech read on her behalf by Luapula Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Evans Sikabbuba during the event held at Sali Riverside Resort, Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Chinama Kangwa said the inclusion of learners in climate change debates was commendable as it provided young people with an opportunity to critically examine environmental issues, share innovative ideas and contribute to finding solutions to climate challenges facing communities.
‎
‎Mrs. Kangwa noted that the debates demonstrated that environmental stewardship is not limited to policymakers and experts, adding that young people have an important role to play in shaping a sustainable future.
‎
‎She reaffirmed Government's commitment to promoting sustainable environmental management and climate resilience through interventions aimed at protecting forests, conserving water resources, promoting climate-smart agriculture and strengthening environmental education.
‎
‎Speaking through a representative, Chief Mabumba reaffirmed his commitment to supporting environmental conservation, climate resilience and sustainable development in the chiefdom and district.
‎
‎The event was attended by Mansa Municipal Council Town Clerk Dr. Josephine Mwanza, Mansa District Education Standards Officer Lucian Makasa, Director of Housing and Social Services Agnes Mwila, District Planning Officer Victor Sakala and other stakeholders.
‎
‎The commemoration, held under the theme "Climate Action Now," began with a match-past flagged off by District Commissioner Mrs. Ireen Chivweta and concluded with an awards presentation ceremony for winners and participants.
