MUNDUBILE, MAKEBI ZULU, 16 OTHERS CHARGED WITH TREASON

Lawyer Milner Katolo, representing Valden Findlay, has confirmed that former presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, lawyer Makebi Zulu and 16 others have been charged with treason, bringing the total number of accused to 18.

Mr Katolo says the seriousness of the charge demands that the State clearly demonstrate in court what conduct allegedly constituted treason, arguing that such a grave offence should not be brought against individuals carelessly or without serious consideration.

The lawyer has also raised concerns over access to legal representation, saying while the accused were eventually allowed to meet their lawyers at Lusaka Central Police, access was restricted earlier in the day.

Mr Katolo further alleges that his client, Valden Findlay, was previously denied access to his lawyers and family and was charged with financing terrorism in the absence of his legal representatives.

He says the defence is now anxious for the matter to proceed to court, where the State will be required to prove its case and the defence will have an opportunity to test the evidence.

POLICE RECORDS WARN AND CAUTION STATEMENTS IN TREASON INVESTIGATION

AUGUST 27, 2026 — The Zambia Police Service wishes to confirm that warn and caution statements have been recorded from Mr. Brian Mundubile and Mr. Makebi Zulu in connection with an alleged offence of treason, contrary to Section 43(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The two were interviewed by investigators and are currently in police custody.

The Zambia Police Service will provide further information on the circumstances of the matter as investigations progress.

Mundubile, Makebi, Given Treason "Warn and Caution", Detained at Lusaka Central Police
Lusaka-Thursday,27th August 2026

After hours of interrogations, Police have given Warn and Caution Statement on treason charges to leading presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile and his Running Mate, Makebi Zulu.
The duo were represented by Sakwiba Sikota SC, Chifumu Banda SC and Bonaventure Mutale SC, have since been detained at Lusaka Central Police.

Earlier the United Nations surrendered the duo to Zambia Police Officers.

Under the Terms of the Agreement of the talks between United Nations Secretary General's representative and President Hakainde Hichilema, of their release, the State pledged that they will be subjected to the rule of law and the due process of the law.

They are currently under interrogation at Law Enforcement Agencies Command Centre near civic centre.

Following the military raid at Mundubile's home in Kabulonga, which saw the killing of former Cabinet Minister of Transport and Communications, Mutotwe Kafwaya, President Hichilema accused his main challenger of allegedly forming or harbouring a militia, with intent to overthrow the government.

Fearing for their lives, the duo sought shelter at the United Nations Buildings located on Alick Nkhata road where they have been until now.

Senior members of the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance led by Bishop Trevor Mwamba and former law-maker, George Chisanga have been charged with treason.
