TANZANIA BANS FOREIGNERS FROM RUNNING SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE COUNTRY

The government of Tanzania has banned foreigners from conducting 15 small- and medium-sized businesses in the country, a move that could force out many Kenyan businesspeople operating and aspiring to establish businesses in the country.

According to a notice released by Tanzania's Minister for Industry and Trade, Selemani Saidi Jafo, the businesses fall under the mining, tourism, agriculture, environment, and technology sectors.

The businesses include mobile money transfers, repair of mobile phones and electronic devices, salon businesses (unless they are conducted in a hotel or for tourism purposes), home, office, and environmental cleanliness, and small-scale mining.

Others include postal and parcel delivery services, tour guiding, establishing and operating radio and TV stations, operating museums and curio shops, broking in businesses and real estate, and clearing and forwarding services.

Foreigners have also been banned from farming, crop purchasing operations, ownership or operation of gambling machines or devices, except within casinos, and ownership and operation of micro and small industries.

A foreigner who is found conducting these businesses will be liable to a fine of up to Tsh10 million (Ksh502,927) and a prison term not exceeding six months.

According to the minister, any Tanzanian citizen who is found helping foreigners conduct such businesses will be convicted and slapped with a three-month prison sentence, in addition to a fine of Tsh5 million (Ksh251,463).

The announcement comes days after the Tanzania Ministry of Finance, in a notice earlier this month, announced that foreigners intending to travel to the country will, from next year, be required to pay almost Ksh5,700 to purchase the mandatory travel insurance for tourists. According to the Ministry, the move intends to relieve the burden on the country's public healthcare systems.

The directive excludes citizens from East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries; however, travellers entering the country from outside the EAC/SADC could still be required to pay the fee.

The insurance was part of Tanzania's 2025/2026 fiscal year agenda but was moved to January 2026 to create more room for consultations with stakeholders.

FEW DAYS AGO THIS IS WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON ALL THE BORDER TO CONGO 🇨🇩 TO TELL THE TRUTH THIS COUNTRY CALLED DRC IS NOT A GOOD COUNTRY 😑

Government has temporarily closed all the three borders to the Democratic Republic of Congo - DRC- on the Copperbelt.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA says the development is aimed at protecting the country's property and human life, owing to the protests taking place in the DRC.

Mr. MULENGA says the last ten days have seen protests in the neighbouring country following the ban of imports in lime and beverages into that country.

He has told ZNBC News in Kasama that the Zambian government will engage authorities in DRC on the possibility of resolving the matter.

Mr. MULENGA has called for patience among drivers and the Zambian people on the traffic that may start to build up as a result of the development.

He said Kasumbalesa, Mokambo and Sakania borders will remain closed until the matter is resolved.

YET AGAIN WE HOPE THINGS NORMALIZE AS USUAL.

Zambia to open border crossing points with DRC

Government will on Tuesday August 13,2024 open border crossing points with Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC- that were temporarily closed on Sunday, following protests in that country.

The announcement was made by Minister of Commerce CHIPOKA MULENGA after talks with the DRC government officials in Lubumbashi.

This was after a communique was issued at the close of the talks between officials from DRC and Zambia in Lubumbashi.

The Communique was read by Ministry of Commerce Permanent Secretary LILIAN BWALYA.

The two countries further agreed to respect the rules governing trade as supported by regional bodies and the World Trade Organization.

According to the communique, the DRC and Zambia also undertook to respect trade agreements between the two countries .

The Communique was signed by Minister of Commerce CHIPOKA MULENGA and his DRC counterpart JULIEN PALUKU.

Speaking after signing the communique, Mr MULENGA expressed happiness that Zambian products will enter the DRC without any restrictions.

And in response, Mr PALUKU said the two countries have agreed that all the goods in transit should be cleared within 30 days.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE KATETE CHANIDA ROAD, NOW ON - GOING. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY FOR THE OUR GOVERNMENT IN REVENUE COLLECTIONS AND OURS IS TO MINIMIZE TRANSIT TIME WETHER LOCAL OR LONG HAULAGE.

EMPLOYMENT AND CLEARING THAT IS TO SAY TRUCKS DOWNTIME AT THE BORDER WILL BE COVERED WELL, THIS ACTION IS WELL DESERVED BOTH INTERNATIONALLY AND NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES.

THIS ACTION WILL CAUSE GOOD CHANGE TO OUR NEIGHBOR MOZAMBIQUE 🇲🇿 . AS WE SEE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AT THE BORDER GROW BIG TRANSPORTERS WILL HAVE GOOD TURNAROUND TIME LOOKING BECAUSE CHANIDA IS ONE BORDER WHICH DOESN'T DELAY MOVEMENT OF TRUCKS THIS IMPROVES TRADE FACILITATION FOR ALL PARTIES.

WE ARE THANKFUL TO HIS EXELLENCE THE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA MR HAKAINDE HICHILEMA Hakainde Hichilema FOR THIS GREAT MOVE THANK YOU SIR.

AS PART OF THE CLEARING FRATERNITY.

Good evening 👏🏻 ladies and gentlemen.
Our industry as Clearing agents is in danger with RCTG, In SADC region wants to implement this Animal will kill our business for we will be left with no more 😢 work. We urge u the country the community to help us say No to this RCTG.
Below is a meeting which was held by our leaders to with the relevant level authorities to lay out our disapproval.

Yesterday we had a Trade Facilitation Technical Working Group meeting at the Radison Blue hotel.

Present at the meeting with me was Mrs. Theresa Banda, ZCFAA representative.

This Technical Committee is Co-Chaired by ZRA CG and MCTI PS.

We talked to the PS after the meeting to secure an appointment with her to discuss RCTG as industry. She has requested as to give her the documents which were presented to SADC so that she can read through and then call a meeting with Industry representatives to discuss the RCTG and Government position.

I will deliver the same on Monday so that she can go through and call us possibly during this same coming week.

I thought this is a starting point to discuss this thorny issue with Government AGAIN.

I submit.

Jonathan Moono
Good morning CHD Clearing Agents. My fear is that we are just saying in this group to say we don't need RCTG while we're not taking a proper action, does it mean that we have people who are in the organization of implementing RCTG in this group, that they're hearing our cry, our protest?
Coz I don't think we had a single demonstration on this. Even in this group only few seems to be willing to fight against RCTG and others are just quiet. What kind of unite is that??
It pains me a lot when I sat down nd think about my go if this implementation is successfully done , I have no one who can help me to find a job in government and you know these days getting a job is not about qualified you are but it's about who you know. I look at on the other angel, how many teachers are in this industry who are not deployed . Others are holding Diploma's, Degrees,
masters degree so on and so forth but they found rest in this industry because of lack of jobs in government. How are we going to survive. We depend on you our leaders and we are just back ups as up coming agents in this industry .
So my appeal goes to you our leaders in all borders , please try to make things quicker and tell us what next or organize meeting so that each and everyone can share his/her concern on the way forward to stop RCTG. Thank you.
