The debate surrounding the proposed renaming of Simon Mwewa Lane Market has quickly evolved from a council decision into a national political conversation.

What began as a resolution by the Lusaka City Council to rename the market to “HH Lumumba Market” was swiftly halted by Gift Sialubalo, who revoked the decision just hours later.

But the controversy did not end there.

Chilando Chitangala has reportedly maintained that councils operate independently under the law and should not be politically directed on such matters.

At the same time, voices such as Nevers Mumba have entered the debate, arguing that the issue may have deeper political motivations tied to Lusaka’s mayoral race and the legacy attached to the Simon Mwewa name.

And this is where the discussion becomes bigger than just a market name.

Because the real questions are now:

Should public institutions rename places already carrying historical or civic significance?
Should serving presidents have public infrastructure named after them while still in office?
And how independent should local councils truly be from central government influence?

Supporters of the proposed change may argue that leaders who contribute to development deserve recognition.

Opponents, however, believe that removing names tied to past civic contributions risks erasing local history for political convenience.

Simon Mwewa was not just a random figure. He was one of Lusaka’s notable mayors, and many believe the market name represents a civic legacy beyond politics.

At the same time, the reaction from central government has also opened another debate about the limits of council autonomy and whether political pressure should influence local decisions.

This is why the issue continues to divide opinion.

Because beneath the headlines is a larger national conversation about politics, legacy, power, governance, and memory.

💬 What do you think?

Should the market keep the Simon Mwewa name?
Should national leaders have public places named after them while in office?
And are councils truly independent in Zambia today?

As Zambia moves closer to the 2026 general elections, attention is beginning to shift toward who is serious about entering the presidential race.

A number of political figures and party leaders have reportedly paid the K100,000 nomination fee to the Electoral Commission of Zambia, signaling their intention to contest.

Among the notable names are:

• Hakainde Hichilema – UPND
• Dr Fred M'membe – Socialist Party
• Harry Kalaba – Citizens First
• Chitalu Chilufya – Patriotic Front
• Kelvin Fube Bwalya – Zambia Must Prosper
• Brian Mundubile – Forum for Democracy and Development
• Given Katuta – Independent Candidate
• Trevor Mwamba

And several other aspiring candidates from different political movements.

The growing list reflects just how competitive and politically active the 2026 elections are shaping up to be.

But beyond paying nomination fees, the bigger question remains:

Who truly has the message, structure, and public support to lead the country?

Because elections are not won on paper alone.
They are won through connection with the people.

💬 Looking at the current names, who do you think will shape Zambia’s political conversation the most in 2026?

On her special day, Mutinta Hichilema marked her birthday not with celebration alone, but with service and purpose.

The First Lady arrived in Lusaka West for the commissioning of the Mutinta Hichilema Secondary School, accompanied by Maliti Solochi and Douglas Syakalima.

It was more than just an official event.

It became a symbolic moment — a birthday connected to education, opportunity, and the future of young people.

While many celebrate birthdays with gifts, this moment reflected something different: a lasting contribution that will continue impacting lives for years to come.

Because every school opened is another door opened for the next generation.

Happy Birthday to the First Lady, and congratulations to the community on this important milestone.

For decades, the conversation around birth control has largely focused on women.

Now, scientists are developing a new male contraceptive that could change that balance completely.

Researchers have announced progress on a long-lasting injectable contraceptive for men, designed to prevent pregnancy for up to two years without using hormones. The innovation is currently moving into Phase 2 human trials.

Unlike traditional hormonal methods, this procedure works by placing a special gel inside the tubes that carry s***m. The gel blocks s***m cells while still allowing other fluids to pass normally.

What makes this development stand out is not just its duration, but the promise that it can be fully reversed.

Scientists say early studies suggest fertility can return once the gel is removed or dissolved, although further testing is still underway to confirm its long-term safety and effectiveness.

If successful, this could become one of the biggest shifts in reproductive health in decades — giving men a more active role in family planning while reducing pressure that has historically fallen mostly on women.

Still, researchers caution that more trials are needed before the method becomes publicly available.

But one thing is clear:

The future of birth control may no longer be a conversation for women alone.

💬 Would you consider this option if it became available?
Do you think male contraceptives could change family planning worldwide?
