Last year, we explored new horizons with Read Scape. In 2026, we are shifting our focus toward growth, systems, and the preparation required to reach the next level. Our guiding mantra for the year will be:

Read-Scale: Books that build the bridge to what’s next.

What does "Read-Scale" mean for us? Scaling isn’t just about getting bigger; it’s about getting better. It’s about building the mental infrastructure to handle bigger challenges, wider perspectives, and more complex ideas. This year, our reading list will focus on:

The Foundation: Strengthening our habits and mindsets.

The Expansion: Pushing our boundaries and exploring "big picture" thinking.

The Bridge: Connecting the lessons within these pages to our personal and professional "next."

We aren't just reading to finish books this year; we are reading to build a foundation for the future. I can’t wait to see the conversations this theme will spark and the growth we’ll experience together.

"Braving the Odds"

A Memoir on Perseverance, Finance and Faith by Mizinga Melu (CEO)

The author shares her successful story as a thought leader in the corporate world as the only woman in the boardroom and first woman - CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Zambia (SCB1)

When it it involves CEOs in Zambia, few are as admired, respected, and intriguing as Mizinga Melu. She has a healthy resume and a string of accolades attached to her name.

Mizinga Melu is among the few CEO's in the country at the helm of a large financial corporation.

Braving the Odds: A Memoir on Perseverance, Finance and Faith is Mizinga Melu's debut book, which hit the market on 29 Jan, 2021. It is a memoir that chronicles Mizinga's career. Here we meet her Family- parents and six siblings. Her father played a crucial role in modelling her life decisions.

In the first few chapters, she describes her modest beginnings that would later emerge her to the woman she is today.

She completed her her high school at Roma Girls Secondary school and considered a career in nursing, which turned into a tragic experience. From this disappointing episode, she grappled enough motivation to embark on a career in banking, which was inspired by her first job with Zambia National Comercial Bank (ZANACO). From here, Mizinga charted course through the complex corporate terrain.

After attaining her academic qualification in the United Kingdom, Mizinga joined Standard Chartered Bank as a management trainee. A resilient young lady full of ambition and packed with potential, she would work as float, navigating through various departments. She acquired as much knowledge as she could and took on responsibilities that most would refrain from. “I saw the advantage of having a lot of tools in my tool kit and disadvantage of being a specialist,” she narrates.

Mizinga's determination and diligence are traits her supervisors quickly identified in her.

"Braving the Odds" is a thought-provoking and empowering memoir by Mizinga, a trailblazing woman who embodies resilience and determination. This inspiring narrative motivates women to reach their full potential, shatter glass ceilings, and strive for excellence.

Mizinga's remarkable journey serves as a beacon of hope in male-dominated corporate landscapes, demonstrating achievable success. Her leadership insights are invaluable for aspiring leaders seeking top positions.

It did not take long before the Mizinga was considered for leadership positions that acknowledged her hard work in Tanzania, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. She shares her different experiences in these places, both the good and the challenges that were presented. With each leadership role, Mizinga would often find herself the only African woman in the boardroom and had to prove that she belonged. She says, “Although I knew I deserved to be where I was, I sometimes had the feeling that I was a ‘token’ woman in the boardroom; like I was there ‘for the number’—to make the room look more diverse or the company statistics more progressive or equitable.”

Mizinga did not let the challenges impede her from doing her job, emerging in her being the first African female CEO of Standard Chartered Bank.

Mizinga's memoir showcases her impressive career and humility, acknowledging the crucial support of loved ones, mentors, and faith. Her willingness to share sacrifices, vulnerabilities, and glowing reviews from supervisors makes her story remarkably relatable.

With impressive accomplishments already under her belt, Mizinga's story is far from over. We eagerly anticipate her future endeavors and the lessons they will bring.
