Day 2 of the CABI Digital Skills Training in Mazabuka District continued with engaging and practical learning sessions aimed at strengthening participants' digital competencies. The training focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to use digital tools for communication, information access, collaboration, and improved agricultural advisory services.

Bridging the Digital Gap for Gender-Responsive Agricultural Advisory Services in Mazabuka 🌱📱

The Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) has conducted a digital skills training for extension officers in Mazabuka District, aimed at promoting gender-responsive digital advisory services and improving access to agricultural information for women farmers.

The training introduced extension officers to CABI’s PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank, a digital platform that provides instant access to reliable, localized resources on crop production and sustainable pest management.

CABI highlighted that traditional agricultural advisory services often struggle to provide farmers with timely and accurate information, contributing to low productivity and limited adoption of sustainable farming practices. Digital advisory services offer a solution by providing farmers with real-time, context-specific guidance to support better decision-making.

Speaking during the training, CABI Research Officer Dora Shimbwambwa said research conducted by CABI in 2023 revealed significant gender-related barriers affecting access to and use of digital tools in agriculture.

She noted that while digital tools provide opportunities to improve extension delivery, women farmers continue to face challenges such as limited access to smartphones, financial constraints, low digital skills, language barriers, high internet costs, and social norms that affect their participation in accessing agricultural information.

The initiative seeks to empower extension officers with digital skills that will help ensure more inclusive agricultural services, enabling women and other vulnerable groups to access the knowledge and support needed to improve productivity and livelihoods.

The Ministry of Agriculture in Mazabuka District has conducted a refresher training for Block Extension Officers under the Zambia Growth Opportunities (ZAMGRO) Programme to strengthen their capacity ahead of farmer trainings.

Senior Agricultural Officer Lauraine Mwansa said the training is equipping newly deployed officers while refreshing all field staff on climate-smart agriculture and other best practices that will help farmers improve productivity and achieve food security.

During the training, Acting Nutrition Officer Helen Namala encouraged officers to promote diversified crop production to improve household nutrition, while Land Husbandry Specialist Stephen Mwewa emphasized the importance of treating farming as a business through proper record keeping.

The ZAMGRO Programme is a Government of Zambia initiative, supported by the World Bank, aimed at transforming agriculture through increased productivity, climate resilience, and improved livelihoods.

🌱 Changing Lives Through Climate-Smart Agriculture in Mazabuka

Smallholder farmers in Nkonkola Agricultural Camp, Mazabuka District, are transforming their livelihoods through the Enhanced Livelihoods and Sustainable Agricultural Markets (ELSAM) Project.

Through village savings groups, climate-smart agriculture and access to agricultural technologies, farmers are improving productivity, increasing household incomes and building resilience to climate change.

For lead farmer Obert Chooma Beene, savings accumulated through the Tuzyibe Club enabled him to hire mechanisation services to rip his one-lima field, making land preparation easier while adopting climate-smart practices such as crop rotation.

Rain gauge minder Kizito Choonga continues to provide vital rainfall information to fellow farmers, helping them make informed decisions on when to plant and which crops are best suited to seasonal rainfall patterns.

Climate Change Champion Augustin Kamocha has so far constructed 27 energy-saving stoves, helping households reduce firewood consumption while promoting environmental conservation.

Meanwhile, Veronica Hakaloba says the project's savings initiative has enabled her to pay her daughter's college tuition, improve her home, reduce post-harvest losses using hermetic storage bags, and expand into maize aggregation, purchasing 70 bags of maize (50kg each) this season.

The ELSAM Project, implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and funded by the European Union, continues to empower smallholder farmers with sustainable solutions that improve food security, strengthen resilience and create lasting economic opportunities.

Building Gender-Responsive Agricultural Extension Services

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with CABI, the Gender Division, and the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI), conducted a training on Basic Gender Concepts and Social Inclusion for district-level agricultural personnel and Camp Extension Officers.
The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of extension staff to deliver agricultural services that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the diverse needs of farming communities.
Agriculture remains a key driver of livelihoods, food security, and economic growth. Women, youth, and persons with disabilities play a vital role across the agricultural value chain. However, unequal access to productive resources, agricultural extension services, markets, finance, technology, and decision-making opportunities continues to limit their full participation and potential.
Participants were taken through key topics including s*x and gender, aspects of gender socialization, gender norms and roles, and the challenges to achieving gender-equitable agricultural service provision.
Speaking during the training, CABI West Africa Communication Specialist Solomon Agyemang Duah emphasized the importance of adopting a gender-sensitive approach in agricultural service delivery.
"Women are very hardworking producers, but they often face challenges in scaling up production because of discrimination rooted in gender roles and gender norms," he said.
The training reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Agriculture and its partners to promoting inclusive agricultural development by equipping extension officers with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing agricultural services and opportunities.

ELSAM Project Hands Over Aggregation Equipment to Community-Based Aggregators in Mazabuka District
The Enhancing Livelihoods and Smallholder Agricultural Markets (ELSAM) Project has strengthened agricultural marketing in Mazabuka District through the handover of aggregation equipment to 23 Community-Based Aggregators (CBAs). The equipment, comprising digital platform scales, sieves, and tarpaulins, is expected to improve produce aggregation, quality assurance, and market access for smallholder farmers.
The equipment was officially handed over by the Mazabuka District Commissioner, Mr. Oliver C. Mulomba, during a ceremony attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, ELSAM Project partners, and beneficiary aggregators.
Prior to the handover, the 23 Community-Based Aggregators underwent comprehensive training facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture under the ELSAM Project. The training covered key areas including market systems, the role of aggregators under the ELSAM Project, entrepreneurship, business planning, aggregation techniques, digital aggregation, and the use of digital market platforms. The training aimed to equip the aggregators with the knowledge and skills required to efficiently coordinate produce collection, improve produce quality, and link smallholder farmers to structured and profitable markets.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, District Commissioner Mr. Oliver C. Mulomba commended the ELSAM Project and the World Food Programme (WFP) for their continued support towards improving agricultural livelihoods in Mazabuka District. He noted that empowering community-based aggregators with both technical knowledge and essential aggregation equipment would enhance farmers' access to markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and contribute to increased household incomes.
Mr. Mulomba further encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the equipment responsibly and apply the skills acquired during the training to strengthen agricultural value chains within their respective communities. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Government's commitment to promoting agricultural commercialization, food security, and sustainable rural development.
The handover of aggregation equipment marks another important milestone in the implementation of the ELSAM Project in Mazabuka District. By strengthening the capacity of Community-Based Aggregators, the project is expected to improve market linkages, facilitate collective marketing, and enhance the competitiveness of smallholder farmers while contributing to increased agricultural productivity and economic resilience in the district.
The ELSAM Project is a five-year agricultural development programme in Zambia that aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening market access, and promoting climate-resilient farming practices. The project is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) in partnership with the Government of Zambia under the EU Green Nexus Programme. It runs from December 2023 to November 2028 with a budget of approximately EUR 11 million.

Mazabuka District successfully participated in the Southern Tourism, Agriculture and Commercial Show held at Maramba Stadium in Livingstone from 2nd to 6th July 2026. The District exhibited under the umbrella of the Mazabuka Municipal Council, showcasing the agricultural potential, innovations, and achievements of the district alongside other key stakeholders. The event provided an important platform for promoting agricultural production, value addition, trade, investment, and knowledge sharing among exhibitors from across the region.
The participation highlighted Mazabuka District's strengths in crop production, livestock farming, agribusiness, and agricultural technologies. Through collaborative exhibitions coordinated by the Mazabuka Municipal Council, the district effectively demonstrated its contribution to agricultural development and economic growth in Southern Province.
The district's outstanding performance was recognized during the adjudication process, where Mazabuka District was awarded Third Position among the participating districts. This achievement reflects the commitment, teamwork, and dedication of all stakeholders involved in preparing and presenting the district's exhibition.
In addition to the district's collective success, Mazabuka recorded an exceptional individual achievement. One of the district's farmers Lorine Lumamba emerged as the First Prize Winner in the Individual Farmers Category, demonstrating excellence in agricultural production, innovation, and best farming practices. The Sustainable Instensification of Smallholder farming Systems in Zambia (SIFAZ) today successfully held the National Agribusiness Field day at Siyowi Community Shed in Kalama Agricultural Camp of Mazabuka district.
The event enabled various players in the Agriculture sector to showcase their products and services.
Siyowi Multipurpose Cooperative Society of Kalama Agricultural Camp in Mazabuka showcased its community-based grain aggregation business model, with support from the project.
Farmers belonging to the cooperative bulk their agricultural produce, such as Maize and legumes, and sell to larger offtakers.
The cooperative has, over the years, been supported by SIFAZ to build capacity and formalize its trade.

The SIFAZ project officially presented a cheque worth K120,400.00 to the Kakangala Mothers Cooperative from Naluama Settlement in Mazabuka district, as part of the Sustainable Intensification of Smallholder Farming Systems in Zambia initiative. This Matching Grant funding aims to facilitate the Cooperative's purchase of an oil expeller. The Cooperative received the cheque during the SIFAZ National Agribusiness Day held at the Siyowi Cooperative shade in Kalama, Mazabuka District.
