Sikongo District records cases of Measles .
Tuesday, 26th May, 2026.
Sikongo District Health Office, through Sikongo Mini Hospital, has confirmed 3 cases of measles.
The announcement was made today during an Emergency District Epidemic Preparedness meeting.
District Epidemiologist Mr. Humphrey Kankung’a reported that the district has recorded 25 suspected measles cases, of which 3 have been laboratory-confirmed. He attributed the outbreak largely to cross-border movement with Angola, citing travel, cross-border trade, family visits, and seasonal farming and fishing activities as key factors increasing exposure.
Health officials at Sikongo Mini Hospital are urging residents to watch out for symptoms including runny nose, general body rash, cough, and red eyes, particularly in young children. The public is therefore advised to seek medical care immediately if symptoms appear, as measles is highly contagious and can be fatal if untreated.
Sikongo District Commissioner Mr. Imbuwa called on residents to limit non-essential travel to Angola during this period to reduce the spread of the disease. He also noted that Zambia and Angola are working towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen long-term cross-border health cooperation.
The District Commissioner has directed the Health Department to enhance screening at key entry and exit points, including border posts and health facilities, especially those located near the border.
The public is therefore advised to :
- Monitor for measles symptoms and seek care early
- Avoid non-essential travel to affected areas
- Ensure children are up to date with routine immunizations.
