In a concerted effort to combat waste management challenges, Mashonaland Central Province, continues its National Clean-Up Programme, by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s decree that every first Friday of each month is a Nationwide Clean-Up Day, addressing rampant litter dumping that poses risks of contagious diseases and unhygienic conditions, particularly in urban areas now extending to rural centers. This year, the programme celebrates its 7th anniversary, aligning with the recently introduced National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2), which integrates environmental efforts across economic sectors. Provincial leaders have emphasized the visionary leadership behind the campaign, urging citizens to uphold it as a foundation for sustainable development and public health.

February's National Clean-Up Day adopts the theme "Together for Clean Communities and Protected Wetlands," coinciding with World Wetlands Day on February 2, which highlights global wetland conservation. The theme emphasizes how improper waste disposal in settlements pollutes wetlands, threatening their ecological and socio-economic roles. By linking daily clean-up actions to wetlands protection, the initiative promotes environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and collective responsibility.
Zimbabweans should support Vision 2030, that a clean environment in 2026 and beyond is essential for national health and economic progress, starting with individual and communal efforts.

Mashonaland Central Province Recognizes Importance of Wetlands

Mashonaland Central Province yesterday observed the global significance of wetlands, often referred to as the "kidneys of our planet", due to their role in providing clean water, flood protection, and supporting biodiversity. This year's theme, "Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage," highlights the deep connection between Zimbabweans and wetland ecosystems, emphasizing how traditional knowledge has sustained these vital habitats for centuries. Wetlands encapsulate not just natural resources, but also the history and heritage of the nation, reminding us of the harmonious existence of past generations with their environment.

Zimbabwe's pivotal role in wetland conservation, especially after hosting the _15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15) at Victoria Falls in 2025_ . As the current Presidency of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Zimbabwe is positioned to lead global discussions and initiative

19 January 2025

In a significant move to combat the rising tide of drug and substance abuse among the youth, the office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution today distributed soccer equipment across the province. The handover ceremony was officiated by the Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr. Timothy Maregere, who was representing the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, the Honourable Christopher Magomo.

The core objective of this initiative is to promote physical wellness and provide constructive recreational outlets for young people. By revitalizing sports at the grassroots level, the government aims to divert youth attention away from illicit substances and towards productive, team-building activities.

"Sports are not merely games; they are a vital tool for social cohesion and discipline," Mr. Maregere stated. "By equipping our districts, we are giving our youths an alternative path—one of health, competition, and community pride. This is a direct intervention to reduce the prevalence of drug and substance abuse that threatens our future generation."

The donation, consisting of high-quality soccer balls, was distributed to the District Development Coordinators (DDCs) representing eight districts within the province.

This event aligns with the Second Republic’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind. The Office of the Minister of State and Devolution reiterated its commitment to supporting youth empowerment programs and working closely with local leadership to monitor the impact of these interventions.
