Rusape Monitoring and Evaluation

Last week, the Home Harvest Team had the opportunity to visit our beneficiaries in Rusape and witness first-hand the incredible progress being made in their gardens.

Despite the challenges they face, our beneficiaries continue to demonstrate commitment, passion and determination. Their hard work is clearly reflected in the healthy and abundant produce from their gardens.

One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the creativity of one of our beneficiaries. Without the bricks needed to construct a keyhole garden, she refused to let the lack of resources stop her. Instead, she improvised and constructed a beautiful keyhole garden using sticks. The vegetables growing in it were healthy, vibrant and thriving.

Her story reminded us that a lack of resources does not always have to be a barrier to success. With determination, creativity and a willingness to learn and adapt, we can make the most of what we have.

The Rusape visit reaffirmed our belief that every family has the potential to grow nutritious food and improve their household livelihoods. With the right knowledge, training, guidance and support, that potential can be unlocked.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our Director, Rev. Femayi, for his continued leadership and support; our colleague from Promise Path, Mai Ruzvidzo, for her encouragement throughout the Home Harvest journey; our Growing Healthy Champions, Mr. Mutyaso and Mrs. Makaradza, for their dedication; and our generous funders whose support continues to make this work possible.

Above all, we celebrate our beneficiaries. Your commitment, creativity and determination continue to inspire us. Your willingness to learn, apply new knowledge and make the most of available resources is what makes the Home Harvest journey truly meaningful.

As part of our mandate to break the cycle of crime and foster community development, we successfully conducted a Home Harvest tools distribution programme at Mbare Community Church in Mbare. Following comprehensive training, we ensured that the families of incarcerated individuals received the necessary gardening tools and materials to establish their own household gardens.

The distribution of these tools empowers beneficiaries to put the knowledge and skills acquired during the training into practice. By establishing sustainable gardens, families can improve their household food security, generate income, and enhance their overall well-being. This initiative contributes to stronger, more resilient communities while addressing some of the underlying factors that contribute to crime, thereby supporting our vision of breaking the cycle of crime.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our Home Harvest funders for their generous support, which made this programme possible. We also express our heartfelt appreciation to our Executive Director, Pastor Femayi, for his unwavering leadership and continued support throughout the programme. Our Growing Health Champions and beneficiaries also deserve special recognition for their commitment and active participation, which were instrumental to the programme's success. Finally, we thank Mbare Community Church for graciously hosting us and for their continued partnership from the beginning to the successful completion of the programme.

On the 9th day of May, we had a successful and empowering training and graduation programme in Rusape. Beneficiaries actively participated in the sessions and expressed their appreciation for the food hampers, gardening tools, and certificates they received. The presence of the Mayor of Rusape added value to the event, as he commended the Home Harvest initiatives for their potential to improve household food security and engage young people in productive livelihood activities.
Considering Rusape’s strong agricultural background, beneficiaries demonstrated commitment and readiness to apply the knowledge and resources gained to establish sustainable household gardens. The initiative is expected to contribute towards improved household nutrition, self-reliance, and sustainable livelihoods within the community.

Home Harvest Program Background

The Home Harvest is a program under Prison Outreach Support (POSt) which is an affiliate of Prison Fellowship International (PFI). It was introduced in Zimbabwe in January 2026 to empower families affected by incarceration through improved food security, nutrition, health, and livelihoods. The program supports families left behind by prisoners by equipping them with practical skills to become more self-reliant and resilient. Mostly in Zimbabwe, usually it is the breadwinner who gets into prison leaving the family behind with nothing that can sustain them. So, in order to complement Promise Path, Home Harvest was introduced to boost food security in which the surplus can be sold thereby breaking the cycle of crime, promoting community development.
The program was launched through a training conducted by experienced Home Harvest trainers from Zambia and Kenya, including two sagacious women from Zambia, who equipped local mentors and staff with the knowledge and skills needed to implement the program effectively.
Built on four key pillars—Organic Farming Practices, Nutrition, Medicine, and Income Generation Skills—Home Harvest promotes the establishment of productive gardens that require minimal space, making them suitable for both urban and rural settings. Using natural farming methods without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, families are able to grow healthy and nutritious food while protecting the environment.
Through the program, beneficiaries gain knowledge and skills that improve household nutrition, support healthy living, and create opportunities for income generation, contributing to stronger and more sustainable communities

Today, at Praise and Worship Church in Chitungwiza, we held Session 12 of our mentoring program for the PromisePath Program, marking an exciting milestone as we near the end of this year's mentoring journey.

The session gave children a special opportunity to reflect on the lessons, values, and life skills gained throughout all 12 sessions, celebrating their growth and achievements along the way. The day was filled with meaningful discussions, laughter, and connection, ending with fun circle games for the younger children and a shared meal. We are proud of every child who has participated in this journey and look forward to seeing them continue to thrive regardless of the effects that come by incarceration of their parents.

This Saturday, we had an opportunity to meet with new volunteers who will be mentors for our children in the PromisePath Program. The training was quite exciting, and all volunteers were willing to get involved in meeting with children of prisoners monthly for mentorship activities.
