If diagnosed with syphyllis infection one can be successfully treated. However, if not treated early a mother can transmit to unborn baby (conge***al syphyllis). WHO is working towards eliminating mother to child transmission of HIV, Syphyllis and Hepatitis B.

Remember to book your pregnancy early and discuss any concerns you may have with your healthcare provider.

This year’s theme for World Breastfeeding Week urges the workplaces to support working breastfeeding mothers. “One should not require superpowers to juggle breastfeeding and work “.

A lot of working mothers struggle to ensure their babies get exclusive breastfeeding first 6 months of life. Some do not get paid maternity leave or “breastfeeding hours “ at all.

Here is hoping the world is ready for this discussion to create an environment that facilitates mothers to continue breastfeeding their children.

Talk to your doctor and find out healthy ways to store breast milk and ensure your child gets their breastmilk in your absence.

Have a fruitful week ahead!

Boy or girl!!!

So this is how it goes. Genetically, a woman has 2X chromosomes while a man has an X and a Y chromosome. An egg from the mother contains one X chromosome while s***m from the father will have either an X or a Y chromosome. Fertilisation then takes place. If the man gives away an X chromosome it’s going to be a girl (XX) while if he gives a Y chromosome it’s going to be a boy (XY). This depends on the s***m that wins and fertilizes the egg. The s***m from the father is therefore what determines a baby’s s*x!

Note: In some rare instances it may not be so obvious to assign gender at birth due to several factors . A discussion for another day!!

What is ge***al herpes? It is a common infection of the ge***al area caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2. Most infected people may not experience any symptoms at all. In women it can occur in and around the va**na ,v***a ,urethra and a**s.

It usually presents with one or more blisters that burst leaving sores which may be painful . An early warning tingling sensation often happens before flare-up. There is no cure for herpes however, antivirals can help reduce severity and frequency of outbreaks.

Talk to your doctor about possible concerns especially if you suffer a first ever episode of ge***al herpes during pregnancy.

Emergency contraception refers to contraceptive methods used to prevent pregnancy after in*******se .These include Copper T IUD and ullipristal acetate (Ella) which can be used within 5 days, or COCs and Levonorgestrel (Plan B/Postinor) which can be used within 3 days.

Emergency contraception should only be used in emergencies. One should use more consistent contraception types. They are used after unprotected in*******se, after contraceptive failure or after s*xual assault.

Discuss with your doctor what options of regular contraception are available for you. Emergency contraceptive drugs are accessible in pharmacies to prevent unplanned pregnancies in time.

Ge***al warts are caused by Human Papilloma Virus mostly type 6 and 11. The virus can be dormant in the body for a while before the warts appear. Even with no visible warts the HPV if present in the ge***al area can be spread to others. The warts vary in shape and size ; can be flat and smooth or raised and rough.

Condoms reduce risk of transmission however are not 100% protective. HPV vaccine reduces risk of HPV infection which causes warts.

See your doctor if you have any concerning lumps and bumps in the ge***al area

What are the causes/risk factors?

Chromosomal abnormalities e.g Down syndrome
Consanguinity (couple related by blood) increases risk of rare conditions.
Advanced maternal age
Maternal infections like Syphyllis, Rubella
Nutritional deficiencies like folate deficiency
Maternal medical conditions like Diabetes mellitus
Certain drugs like alcohol and phenytoin

However, most conge***al disorders have no known cause

How to reduce risk of some conge***al anomalies

Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight
Adequate intake of vitamins and minerals including folate
Avoidance of alcohol and smoking
Controlling diabetes mellitus before and during pregnancy
Vaccination against Rubella
Screening and treatment of infections such as syphyllis

Screening during pregnancy

It is important to book your pregnancy early .
Ultrasound scan can be used to screen for Down syndrome and major structural abnormalities in first trimester, during second trimester an USS can screen for fetal anomalies as well.
Maternal blood can also be screened for placental markers to predict risk of chromosomal abnormalities or free fetal DNA to screen for chromosomal abnormalities.

Always prepare questions to ask your healthcare provider and find out about screening tests that can be done.

When a female gets upset people usually joke about it alluding her anger or mood to timing of menstrual cycle. Mild Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) does occur in about 75% of women who get regular periods .

What causes PMS is not known but some attribute it to changes in levels of oestrogen and progesterone during the cycle.

Common symptoms include feeling tired, bloated, irritable, feeling sad or angry, appetite changes including cravings, breast tenderness, headaches ,muscle or joint pains as well as weight gain.

Talk to your doctor and get help especially if the symptoms are severe. There is also need to rule out other conditions that may present in a similar manner.

May is mental health awareness month. It is prudent to talk about menopause as the changes in hormones impact both mental and physical health.

The average age when menopause occurs is 51-52 years. If it happens before the age of 40 it is called premature ovarian failure.

Menopause does not happen suddenly, a woman may experience several years of changes. Menopausal transition occurs in late reproductive years and usually begins with irregular me**es up to 1 year after periods stop permanently.

Women may experience hot flashes, night sweats, va**nal dryness, anxiety, depression and sleep problems during this time.

Talk to your doctor to learn more about what you can do to ease mood changes, hot flushes, va**nal dryness and protect against weak bones.
