Adapting to Student Life in Malaysia and choosing the right Career path!
Your university days are pivotal in shaping how you will eventually be as an adult. You’ll often find yourself faced with different obstacles and undergoing different phases, and if you’re an international student studying and living in a foreign country, chances are the adjustment period never comes that easy. Understanding these all too well, the KDU International Students Society (KISS) of KDU University College constantly organise initiatives and events to ensure that international students at KDU are provided with the support needed to lessen the ‘cultural shock’ and adapt living in a new country.
One of the initiatives include a workshop on how to handle homesickness. Research shows that up to 70% of students will experience homesickness in their early days at university. It is part and parcel of leaving home. However, even mild homesickness deserves careful attention. It is a reminder of our need to respect our physical and emotional needs at a time of stress. Yet for some people, the results of homesickness are quite disabling, and need additional support from parents, friends or professionals. The workshop on Homesickness served as a platform to help students identify the physical and emotional symptoms of homesickness and ways of coping with it. There is a wide range of reactions to being away from home, particularly for the first time. While these may pass quickly, students need to always seek for help from friends, family and also the University Counselling Service. The workshop serves as a first step for these students to better understand how they can cope with homesickness.
KDU University through the student society provides the students with an understanding of the Malaysian culture and heritage, and teaches them how to navigate through the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur. This is what Entrepreneur and Socialite Mr Tatenda Tichafa Karakadzai had to say about the KDU International Students Society initiatives, “KISS helped me to adapt quickly to the environment in Malaysia as well as how to develop my social skills which ultimately turned me into the business minded individual I am today”.
It is also important for international students to assimilate themselves in the multicultural society of Malaysia, and as such, other efforts from the KISS include workshops on Diversity and Inclusion. This is a student-led initiative which encourages unconditional acceptance and encouragement to the participants. These initiatives organised by KISS are only part of a larger support system to how students at KDU can make the most out of their university lives. Through participation at these events, students will find that their university lives can be more enriching and lifelong friendships and bonds can be made.

Saddein Heroes: The Legacy Continues. The next hero is one guy who taught me to believe that anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and believe. This young man has grown from strength to strength and continues to shine everywhere he goes. This is his story...
The first day of how l got to be the person l am started on a February afternoon at the Bulawayo City Hall in 2007.
Saddein Consultancy was hosting an education fair where a number of foreign universities held exhibitions. The "Black Stand" is where it all started.
The representative from Limkokwing University (Theme color black) presented like his life was about to end- leaving me thoroughly convinced that Cyberjaya Malaysia was where l needed to be.
Being 2007, it took over a year to raise the initial fees and l was off to Limkokwing to begin my degree in International Business. The dream had come true!
My three years there were nothing short of phenomenal (despite the obvious financial constraints that came with 2008!) I applied myself fully and really got more than l had bargained, for.
In 2009 l pioneered the Student Activity Centre in the University, alongside two other students; introducing intramural activities to the university.
In 2010 l travelled to Surabaya Indonesia for a six-week internship where l represented both Malaysia and Zimbabwe and upon return was awarded a scholarship for my contribution to the University.
I graduated end of 2010 second in my class and was awarded as Best Entrepreneurial Student and also with an Excellence Award from the University President. Just the week before that, l had won the Malaysian National Innovation Challenge- a business planning competition. That was massive way to close the 'Malaysian Chapter' of life; the education one at least.
I have been back home for four years and l have been blessed to have worked for international companies that have groomed me for the next stage of my life.
I am currently a Financial Advisor with Prestige Wealth Solutions, a company HQ'd in Dubai- and have had the opportunity to start my own company, SociallyZim P/L, after winning the Zol Start-Up Challenge in 2014.
Doubtless, Malaysia had a great impact in my life, l probably would not have had half the opportunities l have had to this day.
I truly owe that experience to ASHE/ Saddein, my parents and brother (the benefactors) and my wife Shamiso (then girlfriend) who supported me all the way!
I would do it all over again.
