Field Standard Operating Procedures training workshop currently underway for Matebeleland North and South extension workers. The exercise addresses technical gaps in the provision of veterinary extension services to livestock farmers.
Thanks to the generous support from the SAFE project with technical assistance from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme - ZAGP .More programs to be availed to capacitate extension workers.

Support towards operationalization of the SADC Regional Agricultural Policy (STOSAR)
project launch at the Celebration centre,Harare. The project aims to enhance information on agricultural production,sustainability and competitiveness for evidence-based decision-making and improving access to markets through implementation of plant and animal pest and disease control strategies at regional level.
“Zimbabwe is on high alert for transboundary animal diseases, and we have been working closely with partners such as FAO to strengthen our biosecurity measures to ensure that the country’s livestock is at optimum health to producehigh-quality meat and meat products that can be exported to lucrative regional and international markets”, said the Chief Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Josphat Nyika.

In progress is the annual review and planning meeting for the SAFE (Transforming Zimbabwe's Animal Health and Food Safety Systems) project. The SAFE project is led by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) working in partnership with the Department of Veterinary Services under the Ministry of Lands,Agriculture,Fisheries,Water and Rural Resettlement and Department of Environmental Health under the Ministry of Health and Chile Care. The project focuses on animal disease control, sanitary and phytosanitary and food safety services.

We commemorate World Rabies Day on the 28th of September of every year. Rabies is a deadly virus spread through the saliva of warm-blooded animals that include all dogs and cats. The virus is transmitted through a bite. Dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans.(WHO).The global target is elimination of Rabies by the year 2030. This year we continue encouraging all pet owners to vaccinate their pets to eliminate the deadly virus. Everyone has a role to play to ensure that all domestic pets are vaccinated against Rabies.

Rabies Alert: Harare
On Monday 1st July, ZNSPCA Inspectors picked up a Ridgeback crossbreed dog found on the side of College Road in Alexandra Park, Harare.
The dogs injuries were consistent with a road traffic accident. The injuries were severe and it was also behaving strangely, showing signs of being infected with Rabies. The dog was humanely put to sleep and the body sent for testing.
Results show that it was POSITIVE FOR RABIES
ZNSPCA have collected the bodies of four dogs in one week who all tested positive for Rabies - Alexandra Park, Msasa Park, Harare Drive and Ballantyne Park.
Please vaccinate your dogs.
