Zimbabwe has advanced its diplomatic outreach in the Caribbean with a significant visit to St. Kitts and Nevis, where the country was represented by H.E. President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s Special Envoy Prof. dr. Amon Murwira, as part of efforts to garner support for Zimbabwe’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
During the Caribbean tour, Prof. Murwira paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, where the two sides engaged in high-level discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation.
Speaking after the meeting, Prime Minister Drew expressed appreciation to Zimbabwe’s leadership, particularly H.E. President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, for dispatching the Special Envoy and noted that despite the meeting taking place late on Friday, his government made every effort to receive the envoy warmly “as a brother,” reflecting the spirit of solidarity between the Caribbean and Africa.
The discussions in St. Kitts and Nevis covered a wide range of critical international and developmental issues as the two countries explored opportunities to collaborate more closely for mutual benefit, with emphasis on strengthening ties between the African Union and CARICOM. Prime Minister Drew described this relationship as a “solid foundation” for deeper engagement.
A key outcome of the visit was the establishment of a Joint Permanent Commission between St. Kitts and Nevis and Zimbabwe. This mechanism is expected to guide structured cooperation in several priority areas, including economic development, science and technology, environmental sustainability, education, and cultural exchange.
Central to Prof. Murwira’s mission was Zimbabwe’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and Prime Minister Drew acknowledged the importance of the message delivered, noting that his country would support Zimbabwe’s bid as he also emphasized the critical role of the Council in advancing global peace and fostering mutual development among nations.
Commending Prof. Murwira’s representation, the Prime Minister described the envoy as “well prepared,” delivering a message that was “succinct and clear.” He affirmed that the envoy had effectively represented his president and conveyed Zimbabwe’s position with distinction.
Prime Minister Drew concluded by expressing his desire to visit Zimbabwe in the near future, signaling optimism for continued engagement and strengthened diplomatic relations between the two nations.
