Mozambican Govt, UNESCO honour Southern African heroine liberators in Mozambique

UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA), the Ministério dos Combatentes of Mozambique with the support of the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC) are meeting to honour and celebrate the role played by heroines in the liberation of Southern Africa. Dubbed “HERstory: Heroines in the liberation struggles in Southern Africa” the regional conference is running today and tomorrow (6 and 7 July 2023) in Maputo, Mozambique. High-level representatives from eight countries are participating in this conference which coincides with Mozambique’s celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Maputo Protocol, an international human rights instrument established by the African Union in 2005 to guarantee extensive rights to African women and girls, including progressive provisions on harmful traditional practices, reproductive health and rights and roles in political processes.

“This conference provides an opportunity to relook at Southern Africa’s liberation through the female liberation fighters’ eyes and to engage youth with their history, understanding better the life we live today. Both women and men played a pivotal role in liberating Southern Africa, but the women’s contribution is not known widely”, said Amina Hamshari, Programme Specialist for UNESCO ROSA’s Social and Human Sciences Unit.

The regional conference: “HERstory: Heroines in the liberation struggles in Southern Africa” aims to promote the Ubuntu spirit and regional cohesion-building by revitalizing the collective memory including women’s, in their equally relentless pursuit for justice and democracy as their male counterparts.

The conference includes panel discussions on key liberation history topics, testimonies from liberation heroines drawn from across Southern Africa and parallel workshops with various stakeholders. Young journalists, artists, and students majoring in history (including representatives from the Southern Africa Youth Forum), will interact with and interview women involved in Southern Africa’s liberation struggles.

“Young people will get a unique chance to (re)appropriate their history by interviewing the liberation heroines from across the region on the first day. On the second day, through this participatory “history telling” exercise, they will restitute in front of the audience their interpretation of the vital solidarity spirit across borders that led to the liberations through women’s stories. We will also organise a training for young actors to develop intercultural competencies through the story circles methodology developed by UNESCO”, said Amina.

The Southern Africa Liberation History Flagship project will be introduced during the round table discussion with donors and other key sponsors to support its expansion. This programme includes research and the production of decolonial pedagogical tools, youth engagement, preservation, and digitalization of liberation archives, in addition to the first volume edited by SARDC on Youth and the Liberation Struggles whose outcomes are key in the extension of formal and non-formal history teaching and telling.

The Conference will include the announcement of “HERstory,” a regional storytelling contest to immediately engage youth in this regional collective memory, as the co-curators of the exhibition. Through storytelling on diverse lived experiences of the liberation struggles in the SADC region, UNESCO seeks to actively engage young women and men with the voices of women in the liberation struggles and to re-structure the inclusive collective memory in which unity is promoted over exclusion. Hence, youth will proudly identify with their region, understand, and acknowledge the regional solidarities and international support to the liberation movements. Through this (re)connection with their intertwined histories and roots, they will recreate a sense of belonging and solidarity among people in Southern Africa and relate with each other on a larger scale.

UNESCO assesses Damage caused by Cyclone Freddy to Malawi’s Culture and Heritage

On 11 March 2023, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) of Malawi announced that Tropical Cyclone Freddy would trigger rains exceeding 150mm on 12 March persisting to 14 March. The record-breaking tropical cyclone developed in the western Indian Ocean and moved eastwards, causing torrential rains, flooding, and catastrophic debris flows (also known as mudslides) across the southern part of Malawi.

According to statistics from the Government of Malawi, multiple flood events and landslides were reported in Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje, Ntcheu, Phalombe, Thyolo, and Zomba local authorities. More than 2,267,458 people were affected, including more than 659,278 displaced, with 679 deaths, 537 missing, and 2,186 injured. A great number of the fatalities following Tropical Cyclone Freddy were due to landslides in the Southern Highlands. This scenario differs from the impacts of similar recent cyclones, where flooding caused most of the fatalities.

In the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) published in late April by the Government of Malawi, the document assesses the damage of Tropical Cyclone Freddy on a macroeconomic, human and social development level. It is within this context that UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, with the support of the Heritage Emergency Fund (HEF) has launched a 20-day mission, led by an international PDNA expert and two local experts in the heritage and cultural and creative industries, in southern Malawi to specifically assess in detail the effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy on the aforementioned sectors.

The mission seeks to determine the extent to which archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, and historical and monumental buildings have been damaged. Consultative meetings will be held with creatives and artists to assess the impact of the cyclone on their livelihoods. Cultural practitioners and other stakeholders will be interviewed, and their feedback will be invaluable to the final document “Post-Disaster Needs Assessment of Malawi's Culture Sector”. Additionally, the three consultants will hold post-disaster needs assessment workshops aimed at strengthening resilience and the capacity to mitigate the risks caused by extreme disasters, the first of which happened in Lilongwe with 40 stakeholders on 23 March 2023. In collaboration with the Government of Malawi, the three consultants will produce this evidence-based Post-Disaster Needs Assessment in the culture and heritage sectors, as well as propose potential recovery efforts.

Unesco Regional Office for Southern Africacongratulates Music Crossroads for winning the UNESCO Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Prize for the Creative Economy 2023.

The Prize's expert jury praised the project's clear commitment to developing the creative economy by giving talented young musicians in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique the entrepreneurial tools they need to explore and understand the specificities of their industry.

Music Crossroads is a non-profit organization created with the aim of empowering young musicians through accessible and innovative training. It was founded in 2013 by the non-governmental organization Jeunesses Musicales International, which strives for the development of children and young adults around the world through music.

As one of its priorities, Music Crossroads created a business school called the MC Academy, which specializes in training young people, particularly in the music sector. The organization has already trained 150,000 young people, 25% of them women, and reached an audience of around one million people across Africa. The training offered takes the form of a one-year professional certification program.

In Zimbabwe, teaching is provided by a team of 30 teachers and has so far trained 270 students aged 18 to 30. The aim is to provide young aspiring musicians with the tools to enter the national and international music market.

The association is currently working on the development of an e-learning platform for their school, which will provide access to video tutorials in all countries of Southern African. The association is also developing a practical application program through the Sounds of Africa concert.

The award ceremony was held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, as part of the Ninth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the 2005 Convention.

The UNESCO-Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Prize for the Creative Economy was created in 2020 with the support of the People's Republic of Bangladesh to reward outstanding achievements in promoting youth entrepreneurship in the creative economy. It is named after the father of the Bengali nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who believed in the power of youth and culture to unify peoples and build peace in society. Each winner receives an endowment of US$50,000. The 2023 winner, Music Crossroads, succeeds MoTIV Creations Limited of Uganda, winner of the 2021 prize.

In recognition of the devastating role of change, Unesco Regional Office for Southern Africa is investing in ways to mitigate the impact.

On Day 2 of the CRIDA training, Patrick Ray from the University of Cincinnati and a renowned expert in hydrological modelling is leading discussions on hydrological modelling for groundwater and surface water which involves modelling process, carrying out performance and Climate stress testing as well as an introduction to evaluation and ranking of adaptation options.

"Hydrological modelling is a powerful tool that can be used to assess and manage water resources," said Patrick Ray.

"This training will provide participants with the skills they need to use hydrological models to make informed decisions about water resources", he adds.

The training is within the framework of the Be-Resilient South Africa and forms Step 2 of the bottom-up Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis (CRIDA) methodology. Currently, in collaboration with local experts from the University of Stellenbosch, University of Venda and the University of Kwazulu Natal, hydrological modelling has been carried out for the Luvuvhu, Sabie/Sand, and Eerste river basins in South Africa and Save as well as the Buzi basin in Zimbabwe with collaboration from experts from the University of Zimbabwe.

The basic ‘abcd’ Water Balance Model is being used for the training. Some of the topics to be covered during the second day of the training include.

-The basics of hydrological modelling
-Different types of hydrological models
-How to choose the right hydrological model for your needs
-How to use hydrological models to assess water resources
-How to use hydrological models to manage water resources
-Performance Metrics and Climate stress test
-Evaluation and Ranking of Adaptation Options

The training is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hydrological modelling. No prior experience is required.

Background on hydrological modelling.
Hydrological modelling is the process of using mathematical models to simulate the movement of water through the Earth's surface and subsurface. Hydrological models can be used to assess the availability of water resources, to predict the effects of climate change on water resources, and to develop water management plans.

Hydrological models are becoming increasingly important as the world's population grows and the demand for water increases. Hydrological models can help us to make better decisions about how to use our water resources in a sustainable way.
