African Parks

Congratulations to #AfricanParks and the #WildlifeWarriors who work relentlessly to conserve the black rhino and other endangered species.

This month we are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the largest single airlift of black rhinos to date. In November 2019, together with the DNPW Malawi, we translocated 17 rhinos from South Africa to Liwonde National Park, in conjunction with WWF South Africa and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, to boost population numbers and genetics. Specific measures are in place to ensure the population’s protection and include aerial surveillance, daily ranger patrols, and the use of advanced technology to allow for 24-hour monitoring. Since its conclusion, the rhinos have acclimatized well, and even better news is that four new calves have been recorded, two in Liwonde and two in Majete. With fewer than 5,500 black rhinos remaining in the wild, these new calves are a hopeful sign that numbers will continue to climb in these secure sanctuaries.
