DAY 2 OF THE SADC COMMITTEE OF SENIOR OFFICIALS RESPONSIBLE FOR TRANSPORT, ICT, INFORMATION AND METEOROLOGY

Following yesterday's official opening ceremony, today’s proceedings focused on Transport and Meteorology, zeroeing in on regional climate readiness. This high-level technical session was chaired by our Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, Mr. Simon Masanga, at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Company ZITF in Bulawayo.

Senior officials deliberated on strategic frameworks to strengthen weather forecasting, regional data sharing, and early warning systems across the SADC block.
During the sessions, officials reviewed preliminary climate indicators for the upcoming 2026/2027 season, emphasizing the need for proactive planning across the agricultural and economic sectors.

Discussions centered on adopting advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, to enhance the precision of localized weather modeling and better support grassroots communities.

Delegates also focused heavily on operationalizing "last-mile" communication strategies to ensure timely, life-saving weather alerts effectively reach remote and rural communities in accessible formats.

Additionally, the session explored regional mechanisms to access global green funds and nature-positive financing to upgrade meteorological infrastructure without putting an extra burden on national budgets.

These technical discussions lay a solid, data-driven foundation for the ministerial sessions ahead, where final regional agreements will be ratified.

Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife Participates in Africa Public Service Day in Mashonaland West.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife is participating in the Africa Public Service Day commemorations currently being held in Mashonaland West Province. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, the programme commenced on Saturday and will run through to Tuesday.

Activities began with a clean-up campaign at the Muzimba Shopping Centre, led by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA). The campaign focused on waste removal and drainage clearing to prevent blockages and reduce the pollution of nearby water sources, directly supporting the theme of universal water availability and safe sanitation by 2063.

Chinhoyi University of Technology is serving as the main hub for the event, with various outreach activities being conducted across the province. Stakeholders are engaging under the theme: “Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063.”

Zimbabwe’s water infrastructure development includes the ongoing 35,000-borehole initiative and the construction of new dams. The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife actively supports these efforts through catchment protection, wetland conservation, and wildlife habitat management.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife attended the 2nd edition of the Sunscreen Forest Project, yesterday at City of Harare Park, in Mabvuku, as part of the International Albinism Awareness Day commemoration.

The tree planting event which was accompanied by sunscreen lotion and sanitary donations brought together people with albinism to the forefront of climate action.

People with albinism are among those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. By planting trees together, this initiative not only restores ecosystems but also ensures that no one is left behind in Zimbabwe’s journey toward climate resilience.

The ministry is proud to stand with communities championing inclusion, environmental stewardship, and adaptation.

Every tree planted is a step toward a greener, fairer future for all.
