Chief Rekayi Tangwena

Chief Rekayi Tangwena is one of Zimbabwe's iconic heroes of the liberation struggle and figure of resistance. One of the most critical moments in Tangwena's life was when he helped Cde Robert Mugabe cross into neighbouring Mozambique undetected by the Rhodesian Forces. The Tangwena people also have a documented history of friction with colonial authorities in which at one point they had 473 cattle impounded by the Ian Smith Regime

Tangwena's rift with the colonial authorities started as soon as he was made chief, he went to the District Office to inform the Native Commissioner that he was now the Chief of the Tangwena people but he was informed that it was not possible since the Tangwena people were squatters on a farm owned by William Hanmer, he was also informed that the Tangwena people were actually registered labourers.

On several occasions Tangwena refused to be evicted from his ancestral lands even in light of an eviction order from the Ministry of Home Affairs. After having been taken to court for refusing to be moved off the land, Tangwena won the ruling and was allowed to live on the land but the Rhodesians resorted to intimidatory tactics. The authorities crafted a dubious piece of legislation which allowed them to evict Tangwena and his people from their land. It was on the September 18, 1969 that the Tangwena were evicted from the land in a violent manner in which some of the Tangwena people were beaten up by the Rhodesian Police.

Rekayi Tangwena also led a demonstration against the colonial authorities at Nyanga Police station despite the brutality that had earlier on been exhibited by the police when they evicted the Tangwena people from their lands. Eventually, Rekayi Tangwena joined the trek into Mozambique to join the liberation struggle. Tangwena is most celebrated for his role in helping liberation heroes such as Robert Mugabe and Edgar Tekere crossing into Mozambique. Robert Mugabe is said to have stayed at the Tangwena homestead for a while before he was smuggled into Mozambique.

Death
Chief Rekayi Tangwena died on June 11, 1984 and was awarded national hero status and laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre.

Emeritus President R.G Mugabe speaking about the ‘coin’ toss with General Tongo

R.G.M : “Tongo would say, ‘what is your choice?’ I’d say heads and tails! I’d say toss (- so that I won a lot).
Tongo would say, ‘but what have I? What is there for me?’
I’d say there is the edge! It can stand on its edge, you still have the edge, it can stand on its edge”

PRESIDENT MUGABE WORKED FOR THE PEOPLE! Not the Elite....

Given the revolutionary background of Zimbabwe's founder father Cde. Robert Gabriel Mugabe, you will unquestionably agree that his legacy is indeed the *PEOPLE'S* *LEGACY*

Cde Mugabe forwarded the hopes and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people above all else. The policies he implemented expressed the democratic will of the People, as they where designed to benefit the majority of the people.

His fight was a stiff fight to correct historical gross injustices of imperialism, white monopoly rule an unfair educational system, land exclusion and a suppressive economic climate that hindered the entire black nationality from progression.

The road Zimbabweans have traveled is indeed less travelled and demanded Cde Mugabe's full commitment and absolute dedication for us to achieve full gains of our revolutionary struggle.

_HIS_ _LEGACY_ _LIVES_ and the people of Zimbabwe will forever be greatful for his commitment to their livelihood...

Today in history !

37 years ago on the 26th of December 1979 we lost one of Zimbabwe's dedicated sons, General Magama Tongogara.

Josiah Tongogagara grew up at a farm in Shurugwi. The farm was owned by the Smith family. As a young man he grew up playing with Ian Douglas Smith. Tongogara's parents worked for smith's parents and domestic workers.Years later, the two became belligerents with Smith leading white minority government whilst Tongogara was the Commander of the People's army fighting against colonial hegemony.

We can't forget the role you played in the liberation of our motherland, GENERAL MAGAMA TONGOGARA ! Your spirit lives !

The Legend Fidel Castro died this morning and will be cremated. We join our Cuban comrades in mourning the demise of this giant.

Cuba was in the forefront of the fight against colonialism. Cde Castro was pivotal in the Independence of Mozambique, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe amongst many other countries.

Hundreds of our guerrillas trained in Cuba. After independence thousands of our countryman went to Cuba to study science and mathematics. Every year planes after planes of young Zimbabweans entered Cuba and came back after 5 years either science teachers, engineers and doctors.

Bindura State University emerged as a project of relocating the training that was happening in Cuba back to Zimbabwe. But at the heart of all these programmes, was the man that has gone to meet his creator. Rest in Peace Revolutionary Leader
