INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS COMMEMORATIONS:MANICALAND

City of Mutare, Forest Commission, and other stakeholders participated in International Day of Forests at Meikles Park, Mutare. The event kicked off with a lively march from downtown to Meikles Park, drawing in a large crowd of enthusiastic participants.

The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Honourable, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate M. Mugadza, City of Mutare Councillors, Junior Councillors, Management, staff, and various stakeholders.

In his speech, Minister Mugadza emphasized the importance of forests in people's lives, expressing gratitude to participants for their appreciation of forests' role. He urged Manicaland residents to continue planting and conserving trees, highlighting their numerous benefits to the environment and community. The Acting Town Clerk, Mrs E. Mandiziba also emphasised the need for stakeholders to come together to safeguard the environment for future generations. She highlighted the need for collective action to ensure a sustainable future.

This year's commemorations, which ran under the theme "Forests and Foods," brought together stakeholders from government departments, environmental agencies, and organizations involved in environmental protection. The event showcased the collective efforts of various stakeholders in promoting sustainable forest management and environmental conservation.

The Honourable Minister and other delegates proceeded to MEGA Market, where they planted 400 indegenous trees. This initiative is an extension of the city greening program, which City of Mutare collaborated with MEGA market last year. MEGA Market has taken up space in front and behind the industrial park. The program emanates from a Council resolution that permits businesses, institutions, and organisations to adopt idle spaces.

2 143 trees were planted last year, and more will be planted. The trees (all indigenous) were donated by Forest Commission.
