Today is World Humanitarian Day. It’s an opportunity to recognize those who put their own lives on hold to save the lives of others.
To do so, we’d like to introduce you to four people who were part of the Swiss relief effort following June’s earthquakes in Venezuela. Some travelled from Switzerland with the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit, whilst others came from Colombia or Peru with the Rapid Intervention and Support Group (Grupo de Intervención y Apoyo Rápido, GIAR). They all shared the same mission: to help those affected.
The GIAR, of which Irina and Rosa Maria are members, is a localized rapid response mechanism for the Swiss humanitarian response and emergency relief in Latin America and the Caribbean. Its deployment of regional experts in times of disaster is a way for humanitarian aid to be where it is needed, as quickly and as effectively as possible.

Every country has its founding story.
For Switzerland, it begins with a pact made in the Alps, somewhere between history and national myth. 🏔️
Every 1 August, that story is celebrated across the country.
Happy Swiss National Day! 🎉

وسويسرا تبدأ قصتها بعهد أُبرم في جبال الألب،

The Rütli Meadow, overlooking Lake Lucerne, is seen as the symbolic birthplace of Switzerland. 🏞️

In 1291, delegates from Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden are said to have sworn an oath of alliance here, a founding myth that shaped Swiss identity around unity and independence.

Each year on August 1st, citizens and officials return to this historic site to mark Swiss National Day and honour the spirit of the Confederation’s origins. 🇨🇭

It was only in 1993, following a nationwide popular vote, that August 1st was approved as a federal public holiday throughout Switzerland.

The initiative received overwhelming support, with 83.8% of voters in favour. The law came into effect in 1994, reflecting the population’s strong attachment to this symbolic date commemorating the founding pact of 1291.

August 1st was not actually specified in 1291. The Federal Charter that marks the founding of the Swiss Confederation is dated only “at the beginning of August”.

It was not until the 19th century that August 1st was adopted as the symbolic date to commemorate the founding pact. An approximation that eventually became the official national holiday in 1994.

Swiss diplomatic missions and Swiss clubs around the world organise National Day events featuring concerts, speeches, traditional food and flag displays. 🌍🎉

But abroad, celebrations do not always take place on the actual day. To gather as many people as possible, Swiss representations often host their celebrations a few days, or even weeks, before or after August 1st.

These events offer a joyful way to reconnect with Swiss roots and share national pride with local and international guests. ❤️

⚽ Hopp, Schwiiz! 🇨🇭 The Embassy staff and friends took their support for the national team very seriously. From midnight to 3 AM, we gathered at the Swiss Residence, hosted by the Ambassador Arthur Mattli, to watch the game. What a splendid match Colombia has offered: such dedication is deeply inspiring. 🇨🇭❤️🇨🇴

🍫 Happy World Chocolate Day!

Swiss chocolate is famous around the world, but there is much more to its story than delicious pralines and chocolate bars.

🇨🇭 Switzerland remains the world's biggest chocolate consumer per person, with an average of 10.3 kg eaten per person in 2025.

🥛 Milk chocolate was invented in Switzerland in 1875, when Daniel Peter successfully combined chocolate with condensed milk, changing the history of chocolate.

🌍 Swiss chocolate is also one of the country's best-known exports. In 2025, 71% of all Swiss chocolate was sold abroad, with Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and the United States among its biggest export markets.

🌱 Behind every chocolate bar is cocoa. In 2022, 82% of cocoa bean equivalents imported into Switzerland came from certified sustainable sources. Switzerland is also working towards more traceable supply chains, better forest protection, improved farmers' incomes and greater use of agroforestry by 2030.

✨ And one final fun fact: according to the traditional story, Rudolf Lindt accidentally left a chocolate mixing machine running over a weekend. The result became known as conching, the process that gives chocolate its smooth, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

The Swiss Residence 🇨🇭 was buzzing as guests gathered to watch the match 🇨🇭vs 🇩🇿 amid warm hospitality ❤️the Swiss team 🇨🇭 delivered a confident 2:0 win on the pitch. Off the pitch, no scoreboard is needed: our two countries 🇨🇭 ❤️ 🇩🇿 share genuine friendship and a common appreciation for bringing people together ❤️. What a wonderful morning we spent with our friends — proof that these gatherings are about so much more than the final score.

تواصل سويسرا تقدمها في تصفيات كأس العالم ⚽️! لقد عج البيت السويسري بضيوفنا الذين تجمعوا لمشاهدة مباراة سويسرا و الجزائر وسط الأجواء الدافئة ❤️، وقد حقق الفريق السويسري فوزًا جميلا بنتيجة 2:0 على أرض الملعب. لكن خارج الملعب، ليست هناك حاجة إلى لوحة نتائج: فبلدانا يتقاسمان صداقة حقيقية وتقديرًا مشتركًا يجمع الناس تحت راية المحبة ❤️ . يا له من صباح رائع قضيناه مع أصدقائنا — وهذا دليل على أن هذه اللقاءات الدافئة التي تجمعنا سويا هي أكثر من مجرد أرقام لربح أو خسارة.

🇨🇭 On 25 June, our Chargée d'affaires a.i. Caroline Trautweiler attended the Annual Diplomatic Lunch at the Ismaili Centre, Dubai.
The event spotlighted the Aga Khan Development Network — a global actor in education, health, and sustainable development, present in over 30 countries.
Switzerland has deep ties to the AKDN. The network was founded in Geneva in 1967. Its late founder, Aga Khan IV, was born in Switzerland and held Swiss citizenship. Its headquarters remain in Geneva today.
🇨🇭 في الخامس والعشرين من يونيو، حضرت القائمة بالأعمال بالإنابة كارولين تراوتفايلر حفل الغداء الدبلوماسي السنوي في المركز الإسماعيلي، دبي.
سلّط الحدث الضوء على شبكة آغا خان للتنمية — الجهة الفاعلة عالمياً في مجالات التعليم والصحة والتنمية المستدامة، الناشطة في أكثر من ٣٠ دولة.
تربط سويسرا علاقات وثيقة مع الشبكة. تأسست في جنيف عام ١٩٦٧. وُلد مؤسسها الراحل آغا خان الرابع في سويسرا وحمل جنسيتها. ولا يزال مقرها الرئيسي في جنيف حتى اليوم.
