SAM HICKEY GUARANTEES MEDAL AS HE REACHES COMMONWEALTH GAMES SEMI-FINALS
SAM Hickey made it a year to remember as he added a guaranteed Commonwealth Games medal to his European Championship Bronze.
The Dundee boxer became the first Scot in 16 years to medal at the Europeans back in May, and will now face a rematch against the man who beat him in the Semi-Finals in Armenia, England’s Lewis Richardson.
The GB Middleweights will meet for a place in a major international final for the second time in three months on Saturday at approximately 12pm.
The 22-year-old booked his place in the final four after comfortably overcoming Adeyinka Benson in the Quarter-Finals, as he stopped the Nigerian in the third round.
Hickey forced a standing count in the final round as he followed up a hard straight right hand which shook the Nigerian to his boots, with a flurry of punches.
The African boxer survived, but not for very long as another combination brought about a second standing count midway through the round, before the referee waved the contest off.
The stoppage came after the Scot had cruised the opening two rounds, using his superior boxing skills and softening him up with some fantastic body shots.
