World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2026-
By: Tyreke G. Thomas-Horsford

Every year on June 17, the international community observes the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the growing challenges of land degradation, desertification, and drought. The observance serves as a reminder that healthy land is essential for food production, water security, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods.

Desertification occurs when fertile land becomes degraded and loses its productivity due to factors such as CLIMATE change, unsustainable agricultural practices, deforestation, and poor land management. Drought, which is becoming more frequent and severe in many regions, further threatens ecosystems, agriculture, and communities worldwide. Together, these challenges place increasing pressure on food systems and the livelihoods of millions of people.

For Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as Antigua and Barbuda, the impacts of drought and land degradation are particularly significant. Extended dry periods can affect crop production, reduce water availability, and increase the vulnerability of farmers and rural communities. As climate change continues to influence weather patterns, building resilience through sustainable land and water management has become more important than ever.

This year’s observance highlights the importance of restoring degraded lands and adopting practices that protect natural resources for now and future generations. Farmers, policymakers, researchers, and communities all have a role to play in promoting sustainable agriculture, conserving soil health, planting trees, and implementing efficient irrigation systems. These actions not only improve agricultural productivity but also strengthen food security and environmental sustainability.

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought also underscores the need for collective action. Governments, international organizations, private sector partners, and civil society must work together to develop innovative solutions that address land degradation and water scarcity. Investment in research, technology, and climate-smart agriculture can help communities adapt to changing environmental conditions while safeguarding natural resources.

As we observe this important day, let us renew our commitment to protecting our land and water resources. By taking action today, we can help ensure a more sustainable, resilient, and food-secure future for generations to come. Healthy land is not just an environmental necessity—it is the foundation of life, prosperity, and sustainable development.
