“ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA STEELPAN ICONS” CAMPAIGN

Honouring the Ones That Shaped Our Sound

The Department of Culture extends warm wishes to the people of Antigua and Barbuda and steelpan communities around the world on the occasion of World Steelpan Day 2026.

To commemorate the day, the Department is launching “Antigua and Barbuda Steelpan Icons: Honouring the Ones That Shaped Our Sound,” a special social media campaign celebrating the people and institutions that have contributed significantly to the growth and development of steelpan in Antigua and Barbuda.

The campaign will run from August 11 to 31, 2026, and will feature influential pan players, arrangers, tuners, builders, tutors, bandleaders and steelbands whose talent, leadership, innovation and service have helped to shape the nation’s steelpan legacy.

PUBLIC INVITED TO SUBMIT RECOMMENDATIONS

Members of the public are invited to recommend steelpan icons from their communities for possible recognition during the campaign.

Submissions may include the individual’s or steelband’s name, community, area of contribution, a short description of their work and any available photographs or historical information.

Recommendations should be emailed to [email protected].

Through this campaign, the Department of Culture aims to celebrate excellence, preserve important stories and encourage greater national appreciation for those who helped transform the steelpan from a marginalized community expression into a respected symbol of creativity, resilience and national pride.

The Department of Culture wishes Antigua and Barbuda and the global steelpan fraternity a happy World Steelpan Day.

May we continue to honour the pioneers, support today’s practitioners and create opportunities for the generations who will carry the movement forward.

THE STEELPAN AND ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA’S MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT

The steelpan is one of the greatest musical inventions of the 20th century. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, the instrument reached Antigua during the mid-1940s and quickly inspired the development of a vibrant local movement.

The year 1945 is recognized as the beginning of the steelpan movement in Antigua and Barbuda. From communities such as Point, Grays Farm, Ottos, Pigotts, Barnes Hill and New Winthorpes, ordinary working-class men transformed discarded metal into music and created a new form of cultural expression.

Their journey was not easy. Early pan players were often ridiculed, punished, physically mistreated and regarded as troublemakers simply because they played the instrument. Steelpan music was once dismissed by sections of society as a “hellish cacophony.” Despite the prejudice and resistance they encountered, these courageous pioneers continued to build instruments, form bands, rehearse, perform and improve their craft.

Through their determination, the sound once rejected as noise developed into one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most important musical traditions.

Antiguan steelbands soon earned recognition at home and abroad. The country’s first steelband competition was held in 1949, while early bands travelled throughout the Caribbean to perform and share their music. In 1952, recordings featuring Brute Force, Hells Gate and North Stars became an important part of the recorded history of Caribbean steelpan music.

Bands such as Hells Gate, Brute Force, Red Army, North Stars and Rising Sun were among the early institutions that helped establish Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation for steelpan excellence. Their players, builders, tuners, arrangers and leaders laid the foundation upon which later generations would build.

The instrument also became closely connected to the development of Carnival, calypso and live musical performance in Antigua and Barbuda. Steelbands provided opportunities for community organization, youth development, musical education, travel and creative expression. Over time, the movement expanded into schools, churches and other institutions, making steelpan accessible to people from all sections of society.

Today, the steelpan remains central to Antigua and Barbuda’s musical identity. It continues to develop discipline, teamwork, confidence, musicianship and cultural pride among our young people while creating opportunities for performance, education, tourism and international representation.

Happy World Steelpan Day!
