"China trip highlights: Fuzhou’s riverside views, amazing Min cuisine, and warm tea culture. Then Tianjin’s Wudadao — Five Great Avenues — with its 1920s villas, tree-lined streets, and old-world charm. From southern coast vibes to northern historic lanes, China gave me culture, food, and unforgettable walks."

Tuesday Mas was EVERYTHING. 🎉

We're still catching our breath from all that soca, those drumlines, and the sea of feathers and sequins. Absolute fire from start to finish!

Shoutout to everyone who noticed our Chinese community's float and the robot dog show — yes, that's Chinese tech bringing some futuristic fun to the festivities! 🐕✨Those little guys are a huge hit in China right now! Glad you loved them as much as we do. 😄

Also, major respect to the local designers who brought Chinese elements into Carnival wear this year — jade motifs, zodiac signs, those elegant sleeve designs. So cool to see two cultures meeting on the Carnival road.

That's the beauty of Antigua Carnival — it's a space where everyone belongs, and where friendships grow. See you next year! 👋

My Experience in China: An Authentic Journey Through Beijing

Living in Beijing as an international student has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Coming from Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean, I expected China to be very different but experiencing it firsthand has given me a much deeper understanding of its culture, history, and way of life. Rather than only visiting famous tourist attractions, I have tried to experience Beijing as a local by using public transportation, walking through neighborhoods, exploring parks, and interacting with people from different backgrounds. These everyday experiences have helped me appreciate China beyond what I could learn from books or social media.

One of the first things that impressed me was how well-organized and efficient Beijing is. The subway system and buses make it easy to travel across the city, allowing me to visit many historical and cultural sites. Standing at bus stops, walking through local streets, and observing daily life gave me an authentic perspective of how people live, work, and interact. I noticed that people value order, cleanliness, and respect for public spaces. Parks are carefully maintained that public transportation is reliable, and people of all ages enjoy spending time outdoors.

Among the places I visited, the Temple of Heaven left the strongest impression on me. Walking through the long tree-lined pathways, surrounded by centuries-old cypress trees, created a peaceful atmosphere unlike anywhere I had experienced before. The balance between architecture and nature reflects traditional Chinese philosophy, where harmony between humans and the environment is highly valued. Watching elderly people exercising, families walking together, and tourists appreciating the historical buildings showed me how these cultural spaces continue to play an important role in modern Chinese society.

I also visited Guozijian and the Confucian Temple area, where I learned about China’s educational traditions and the importance of knowledge in Chinese culture. Seeing ancient buildings that once trained scholars gave me a greater appreciation for the country’s long history of education and respect for learning. As a university student myself, this experience inspired me to reflect on the value of education and personal growth.

Throughout my journey, I discovered that China is much more than its famous landmarks. Some of my favorite memories came from simple moments, such as walking through quiet parks, observing children playing safely, watching elderly couples exercising together, and enjoying conversations with local people. These experiences showed me the strong sense of community that exists in many parts of Beijing.

As an architecture student, I became especially interested in how Beijing and other cities combines traditional heritage with modern urban development. Ancient temples, historical neighborhoods, modern skyscrapers, and green public spaces exist together in a way that tells the story of China’s past and future. This combination has influenced my own understanding of architecture and urban design, particularly the importance of creating spaces that are functional, beautiful, and connected to nature.

This journey has also helped me grow personally. Living in a different culture has taught me patience, adaptability, and open-mindedness. Although there were language barriers and cultural differences at first, each new experience helped me become more confident and independent. I have learned that cultural understanding comes not only from visiting famous places but also from participating in everyday life and respecting local customs.

Overall, my time in Beijing has been an unforgettable experience. It has broadened my perspective, strengthened my appreciation for Chinese culture, and given me memories that I will carry with me throughout my life. More importantly, it has shown me that despite differences in language, traditions, and background, people everywhere share common values of family, learning, respect, and community. This authentic experience has made China feel not just like a place I visited, but a place where I have grown both academically and personally.

Just like the local root vegetables and legumes that find their way into daily meals here in Antigua and Barbuda, lotus roots and lotus seeds are everyday foods in China.

We slice lotus roots into stir-fries and soups, and cook lotus seeds into congee and sweet desserts. Beyond the table, both are also valued in traditional Chinese medicine — part of a long tradition where food and healing go hand in hand.

Different ingredients, different dishes — but a shared way of turning nature's gifts into nourishment.
