The AUA’s AGBU Papazian Library was founded in 1991 the same year as AUA was established. It is named after the Papazian family, a generous benefactor of the American University of Armenia. For the past 21 years the Library has evolved at a rapid pace, implementing contemporary methods of management and technology. Since its founding, the Library has grown in capacity and readership. In 2009 the L

ibrary became the public’s main and central resource throughout the country for the World Bank publications and project reports. Over 42,000 volumes of books and 65,000 online journals and books can be accessed through the library services. The AUA’s AGBU Papazian Library not only serves the students, faculty and staff of the University, but also students and scholars from other institutions. The Library is a member of the American International Consortium of Academic Libraries and the Electronic Library Consortium of Armenia and acts as a national focal point for the Electronic Information for Libraries-Intellectual Property EIFL.net. The Library’s mission is to help the AUA community achieve its learning, teaching and research goals by:
• Identifying and acquiring information resources.
• Organizing and providing access to information resources.
• Assisting all its users in becoming self-sufficient researchers.
• Providing leadership and promoting partnership in developing and sharing information resources.
• Recruiting and developing a highly qualified and skilled staff to provide the best possible service and leadership.

This year’s theme for Open Access Week, is “Who Owns Our Knowledge?”

The 2025 theme asks a pointed question about the present moment and how, in a time of disruption, communities can reassert control over the knowledge they produce. It also challenges us to reflect on not only who has access to education and research but on how knowledge is created and shared, where it has come from, and whose voices are recognized and valued.

To celebrate, the AGBU Papazian Library will be sharing a great open access resource every day.

Today, we celebrate the fiercely original voice behind “Wuthering Heights.” Born on this day in 1818, Emily Brontë became one of the most powerful and enduring voices in English literature. Her only published novel is a gothic masterpiece, exploring themes of generational trauma, obsession, and power. Though often read and marketed as a tragic love story, Brontë’s work defies that narrow interpretation.

“Wuthering Heights” is a bold critique of Victorian ideals, challenging conventional notions of love, class, gender, and morality. Brontë writes not from the center of her society, but from its margins, resonating with the readers to this day.

Born on this day in 1899, Ernest Hemingway became one of America's most influential authors. His short stories capture the alienation that defined a generation shaped by war and uncertainty. Hemingway was a leading figure of the Lost Generation, a term used to describe writers who came of age during World War I. Alongside peers like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein, Hemingway captured the voice of a generation searching for meaning in a world changed by war.

Wrapping up our series on the pioneering women of , we highlight Susanna Sahakyan, the first female valedictorian of the 1993 graduating class. Her achievements set an inspiring precedent for future generations of students.

Reflecting in her speech on her time at AUA, she shared, “Although our studies at the University required much hard work and dedication, including reading by candlelight during many cold nights, we really enjoyed these two years. The feeling of great accomplishment motivated us to pursue our studies to completion.”

She also emphasized the importance of higher education in Armenia encouraging young people to stay committed to their studies.
