Dear ICADS Societies,
From time-to-time ICADS raises a preservation alert asking member societies to spread the word to their society's members when an important Art Deco icon in endangered.As chair of the ICADS preservation committee, I am asking each society to spread the word to your members about the potential destruction of the Copernic Synagogue in Paris by signing a petition to save an important Parisian Art Deco icon, the famed Rue Copernic Synagogue. Despite the fact that for some time ICADS has been opposed to the prospect of the demolition of the Rue Copernic Synagogue and has communicated with a number of municipal and preservation bodies about the future of this building, in June 2023 a permit for the complete demolition of the Rue Copernic Synagogue (Paris 16th arr.) with its important Art Deco sanctuary, was granted by the city of Paris. The demolition permit was granted with no regard for the important history and Art Deco legacy of this historic house of worship, one of the only two Art Deco synagogues in France. The main group leading the opposition is the Association pour la Protection du Patrimoine de Copernic at:

They are organizing opposition and retaining a large law firm specialized in urban and environmental development to help prevent any demolition work from starting.

Stop the Destruction of the Rue Copernic Synagogue!
URGENT: A permit for the complete demolition of the Rue Copernic Synagogue (Paris 16th arr.), with its Art Deco sanctuary has just been granted by the city of Paris (June 2023). Here is the joint press release by the associations to preserve heritage sites (in French). Our combat is organizing and underway. Total demolition is now planned for the rue Copernic Synagogue, situated in Paris’ 16th arrondissement. On October 21, 2021, the board of trustees of the ULIF-Copernic (the association that owns and governs the synagogue) and the architectural firm Valodes et Pistre, which has been given the task of “rebuilding” the hundred year-old edifice, filed a request with the city for a permit of total demolition of the structure.
With no regard for the memorial and Art Deco legacy of this historic house of worship (one of the only two Art Deco synagogues France), ULIF’s board hopes to replace the edifice with a new ostentatious community center completely out of keeping with the Haussmannian harmony of rue Copernic.
The current failiure to preserve this building is the result of two fatal misunderstandings, on the one hand by the relevant authorities of architectural preservation, and on the other by a majority of the members of ULIF’s congregation. Multiple art historians and reputable architectural experts have sounded the alarm (see references below). Our association, APPC, has been fighting for almost seven years for the appropriate historic registration by within the French monument administration and protected status under DRAC, France’s architectural heritage authority. Our association is made up of loyal members of Copernic’s congregation and outside defenders of its heritage.
It goes without saying that we favor any steps aimed at protecting, restoring and improving the site, but we are categorically opposed to the total demolition of this historically emblematic synagogue.
Other Parisian congregations (the Grand Synagogue of La Victoire, Notre Dame de Nazareth) that sought to renovate and upgrade their structures were obliged to take great pains not to damage or jeopardize their architectural heritage. Why not require the same of Copernic?
The stakes could not be more symbolic. How can we bear the notion that this synagogue, which survived two terrorist attacks, in 1941 and again in 1980, should be demolished by its trustees? Worse yet, this project is being promoted in the name of future generations, as if Judaism was required to spoliate its history in order to pave the way for newcomers on virgin fertile soil.
All of this is counterintuitive. Because if Reform Judaism is to face the future, it will cease to be Jewish if it treads on, or stamps out, the heritage it has been entrusted with. This tribute, the imprint of memories of both joy and pain, imbues the atmosphere simultaneously solemn and warm of this synagogue on rue Copernic. The historical weight it bears is invaluable. Unreplaceable. We have no right to deprive future generations of its value and memory

Les associations disent NON à la démolition de la synagogue rue Copernic.
Une alternative fondée sur la réhabilitation est possible.
Le permis de construire valant autorisation de démolition totale de la synagogue de la rue Copernic dans le 16e arr. avec sa remarquable salle de culte Art déco vient d’être accordé (le 9 juin dernier) par la mairie de Paris.
L’Association pour la Protection du Patrimoine de Copernic (APPC), membre des fédérations Patrimoine-Environnement et France nature Environnement Paris qui se tiennent à ses côtés, ainsi que les associations de défense du patrimoine sont consternées : les administrateurs de la Synagogue (ULIF), qui ont porté ce projet, et la Ville de Paris, qui a délivré cette autorisation, ont été ainsi insensibles à l’éminente valeur patrimoniale du site.
L’édifice emblématique, créé par l’architecte Marcel Lemarié avec les conseils et le soutien de Théodore Reinach, présente en effet un patrimoine, matériel et immatériel, exceptionnel en France, dont Paris peut légitimement s’enorgueillir.
Ce patrimoine centenaire disparaîtrait au profit d’un projet destructeur qui ferait table rase de l’histoire, pour ériger un bâtiment massif et ostentatoire, inutilement coûteux (25 millions d’euros), et dont le bilan carbone (une façade en pierres acheminées depuis Jérusalem et des plaques de verre et de métal doré) contredirait la priorité absolue qui est désormais attachée à la protection de l’environnement. En rupture complète avec l’architecture homogène du quartier, ce projet le serait aussi avec le legs patrimonial des bâtisseurs de Copernic qui avaient souhaité que ce lieu de culte respecte une grande discrétion envers la cité, incarnant ainsi les vœux de laïcité de notre Constitution républicaine.
Quelques riverains parlent à ce sujet d’une « prise en otage de tout un quartier ».
Rappelons ici que l’architecture de la synagogue Copernic incarne d’une façon exemplaire les vœux de laïcité de notre constitution républicaine : elle respecte la plus grande discrétion des insignes religieux envers la cité.
Le moment choisi pour une telle autorisation est d’autant plus incompréhensible que le 6 juin 2023, la ville de Paris adoptait son premier Plan Local d’Urbanisme (PLU) bioclimatique ayant pour objet de permettre à Paris de « devenir une ville plus sobre, plus respectueuse de l’environnement et mieux adaptée au changement climatique ».
Ceci alors que la Ville recommande dans son Projet d'Aménagement et de Développement Durable (PADD) :
N°8 : La mise en valeur de la beauté de Paris en conservant et réutilisant plutôt que de démolir et reconstruire, le respect d’un usage frugal des ressources… Le souhait de la Ville de valoriser notamment les points de vue et les perspectives, ses multiples identités, son patrimoine urbain et de penser à la nature comme à un élément de patrimoine.
N°9 : La raréfaction des emprises libres étant l’occasion de promouvoir la réhabilitation plutôt que la destruction… Le PLU bioclimatique propose une nouvelle manière de construire, plus sobre et respectueuse de l’existant.
Les associations, parisiennes et nationales, qui défendent Copernic ne peuvent accepter que l’âme des lieux soit perdue pour toujours, que la mémoire des évènements, heureux et malheureux, qui ont jalonné la vie des fidèles et des habitants, soit effacée à jamais.
Elles ne peuvent davantage accepter un projet qui, sous couvert de modernité, est en réalité un projet d’un autre temps, construit à rebours de l’impératif climatique et de la sobriété qui s’impose désormais en matière d’urbanisme.
Le combat s’organise. Le cabinet Huglo Lepage Avocats a été saisi afin qu’il introduise dans les plus brefs délais un recours s’opposant à ce projet néfaste.
Des alternatives conservant l’existant sont possibles, alors même que l’ULIF a refusé de les entendre, contrairement au vœu exprimé par le Conseil de Paris. Deux pistes ont déjà été proposées. D’autres projets sont à venir.
Plus que jamais, les associations signataires sont déterminées et appellent les défenseurs du patrimoine et de l’environnement à rejoindre leur combat.
