Farhud - pogrom nad Judi v Bagdadu, ki je pred 85 leti uničil eno najstarejših judovskih skupnosti na svetu.

Junija 1941 so množice v Bagdadu napadle in brutalno morile Jude zgolj zato, ker so bili Judje.

Farhud je postal simbol preganjanja, s katerim so se soočale judovske skupnosti po vsem Bližnjem vzhodu.

Danes se spominjamo žrtev, častimo bogato dediščino iraških Judov in ponovno potrjujemo pomen boja proti antisemitizmu, sovraštvu in diskriminaciji.

85 years ago, the Farhud pogrom shattered one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world.

In June 1941, mobs in Baghdad brutally attacked, murdered, assaulted, and looted Jews simply for being Jewish. The Farhud was not only a tragedy for Iraqi Jewry, it became a symbol of the persecution faced by Jewish communities across the Middle East.

Today, we remember the victims, honor the rich heritage of Iraqi Jews and reaffirm the importance of standing against antisemitism, hatred, and incitement.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the cartoon published on the front page of *Mladina* today, depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as controlling Janez Janša like a puppet, accompanied by the headline “Hostages of Israel.”
While political satire is a legitimate and important part of democratic discourse, the imagery used in this case crosses a troubling line. The depiction evokes long-standing antisemitic tropes of Jewish control and manipulation of political leaders and global affairs—motifs that have historically fueled hatred, discrimination, and violence against Jews.
In my capacity as a former Ambassador of Israel responsible for combating antisemitism and promoting Holocaust remembrance, I must emphasize that this type of imagery is precisely what has been identified as contributing to the spread of antisemitism. The decision to invoke Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu within the context of an internal political dispute is deeply concerning and risks encouraging hostility toward Jews and Israelis. Such sentiments, regrettably, are already circulating across social media platforms.
Portraying Israel, or a Jewish leader, as secretly controlling others is not merely criticism of policy; it draws upon deeply rooted conspiratorial narratives that have been used for centuries to delegitimize and demonize Jews collectively. Such representations risk reinforcing harmful stereotypes rather than contributing to constructive and informed debate.
Criticism of governments, including that of Israel, is entirely legitimate and necessary. However, it must be exercised responsibly, without resorting to imagery that echoes antisemitic themes or collective demonization.
As a respected publication, *Mladina* carries both influence and responsibility. I urge you to carefully consider the implications of this portrayal and to ensure that future content maintains a clear distinction between legitimate political critique and harmful stereotyping.
