The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Board of Governors convenes today in Vienna, and 🇺🇳 the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Vienna is following closely as an observer.

This week’s deliberations come just ahead of the 70th IAEA General Conference, where all Member States will gather to consider key issues across the Agency’s mandate.

From safeguards and nuclear security to the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, it’s an important month for discussions on the international nuclear agenda.

🌍 The future of international security needs young leaders at the table.

UNODA welcomed 29 participants of the CENTRAL Leadership Program 2026 🎓, bringing together students from universities across Europe for a conversation on disarmament, our work, and today's rapidly shifting security environment.

From geopolitical tensions and rising military spending to emerging technologies and the resurgence of nuclear weapons, the challenges we face are significant. So is the importance of ensuring young people have the knowledge and opportunities to engage with and to shape what comes next.

The legacy of nuclear testing is not only history. It is a warning.

Marking in Vienna 🇺🇳, UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Vienna joined the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization and the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Austria 🇰🇿 in reaffirming a clear message: nuclear testing must remain in the past.

30 years after the opened for signature, bringing it into force remains essential to ending nuclear testing for good and advancing the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

The lessons of the past must guide our action today.

🤝 The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization Executive Secretary Robert Floyd, Ambassador Tileuberdi of the PM of Kazakhstan to Austria, and our Chief of Office Rebecca Jovin led a symbolic walk around the fountain at the Vienna International Centre to and raise awareness on the humanitarian consequences of nuclear test explosions.

The UNODA Office in Vienna stepped up for disarmament. Together 🕊️

Colleagues from UNODA's Vienna Office and The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization laced up and walked side by side, covering the symbolic 8.29 km distance (yes, that's 8/29 for a reason) in support of a world without nuclear test explosions 🌍👣

There's still time to join us. Wherever you are in the world, you can step up too: walk, run, cycle, skate, however you like. Invite a colleague, invite a friend, and help raise awareness of the humanitarian consequences of nuclear explosions.

The Challenge ends on 29 August, marking the International Day Against Nuclear Tests .
