What does disarmament look like in a world of rapid technological change and an evolving geopolitical context?
At the Vienna Conversation Series, speakers discussed the central role of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, emerging technologies, the importance of youth engagement, and what multilateral cooperation must look like going forward.
Disarmament and diplomacy remain essential tools to addressing today's security challenges and tomorrow's risks.
Thank you to our speakers, our moderator, and everyone who joined us in Vienna and online.

The UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, is in Vienna. The first stop on her trip was a visit to our UNODA Vienna Office host government, Austria. She met with State Secretary Sepp Schellhorn to discuss issues of common priorities, such as UNODA’s growing presence in the city and Austria’s upcoming seat in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.

Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the atomic bombings (hibakusha) and a lifelong advocate for nuclear disarmament, joined a screening of the documentary “The Vow from Hiroshima”, which traces her personal journey and her commitment to the elimination of nuclear weapons.

Organized by UNODA and held in Vienna, the public screening featured Ms. Thurlow, who shared an urgent call to Member States to advance nuclear disarmament efforts, while encouraging young people to carry forward this legacy and shape the future of disarmament dialogue. “What matters most is to avoid succumbing to indifference: silence and resignation allow dangerous systems to continue unquestioned”, she said.

Director Susan Strickler and writer Mitchie Takeuchi also shared insights into the film’s vision and approach, underscoring that at the heart of nuclear disarmament are deeply human stories.

By sharing the voices of hibakusha, we can engage and inspire new generations to advocate for a more peaceful and safer future. 🕊

Conversations on arms control and disarmament in a changing security environment. That was on the agenda of the Western Balkans workshop organised by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research and the Austrian Ministry of Defense at Reichenau an der Rax. Our Chief of Office, Rebecca Jovin, joined on the first day alongside speakers from UNIDIR, the OSCE – The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and RACVIAC to reflect on the successes and challenges of global, regional and sub-regional arms control and disarmament efforts and engage with participants on collective actions needed to strengthen the existing toolbox in support of peace and security. Thanks for having us!

☢️ Nuclear-weapon-free zones (NWFZs) are a proven pillar of the international disarmament and non-proliferation architecture, building trust and enhancing regional and global security.

At “Beyond the RevCon: Leveraging Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones for Risk Reduction”, panelists discussed how each NWFZ reflects the unique security realities of its region and offers valuable lessons for advancing the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.

UNODA Vienna Chief Rebecca Jovin highlighted the upcoming UN-mandated comprehensive study on existing and potential NWFZs and opportunities to strengthen their contribution to peace and security.
