“What is the world made of?” Today we say atoms, and that’s thanks in part to John Dalton. He was the first to put forward experimental evidence of elements and matter being composed of extremely small particles, which he called atoms.

Born on this day exactly 255 years ago, Dalton is renowned for his pioneering work in physics and chemistry. Dalton theorized that every form of matter — solid, liquid or gas — was composed of indivisible and indestructible building block, or atoms. He proposed that all atoms of an element were identical, but that different elements had atoms of differing size, mass and chemical properties. This was the first complete attempt to describe all matter in terms of atoms and their properties.

Although advances in science and technology have proven this theory was not exactly correct, it did lay the foundation for how we now understand matter at an atomic and sub-atomic level.

Environmental remediation aims to protect people and the environment by reducing radiation exposure from soils, sediments, surface water, groundwater and biota that have been contaminated by radioactive material from legacy sites.

This week, as experts gather for the IAEA's Meeting of the Uranium Mining and Remediation Exchange Group from 31 August to 4 September 2026 to share knowledge and experience on addressing contaminated legacy sites, we take a look at why environmental remediation matters, and how to restore radioactively contaminated land and protect people and the environment.

As the maritime sector looks for alternative energy sources while maintaining long-distance operations, nuclear technologies are emerging as a promising part of the solution.

The IAEA's new ATLAS (Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea) initiative is helping bring nuclear innovative technology to the maritime sector – safely, securely and peacefully.

From nuclear-powered ships to floating nuclear power plants, ATLAS will support international cooperation and help build a framework for the safe and secure deployment of nuclear technologies at sea.

A MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, scan is made by turning strong magnets on and off to excite hydrogen atoms in water molecules inside the body. These excited atoms release varying radio signal frequencies depending on the body tissue, which the MRI machine then picks up to create images.

It was physicist, Edward M. Purcell, who independently discovered key methods behind MRI. Today is his birthday!

Purcell’s research focused on nuclear magnetic resonance in liquids and solids. Part of his work looked at how turning magnetic fields on and off in various materials changed the spin of certain protons and resulted in different radio signal frequencies. This experimental work formed the basis for the development of MRI machines decades later. His work earned him a share of the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics.
