🏅 Congratulations to Bushfires NT Fire Warden and Volunteer Firefighter, Dianne Tynan, on being awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal.

For more than 42 years, Di has dedicated herself to protecting the Darwin rural community through her leadership, commitment and service. As a founding member and Captain of the Elizabeth Valley Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, she has been a role model in a traditionally male-dominated field and a passionate advocate for volunteer firefighting.

Di currently serves as President of the Bushfires NT Volunteers Association, a delegate to the Council of Australian Volunteer Fire Associations, and a member of the Northern Territory Bushfires Council and the Bushfires NT Vernon Arafura Regional Committee.

Throughout her distinguished career, she has worked on the frontline in some of the most challenging bushfire conditions, helping to protect lives, property and communities across the Darwin rural area.

Her passion, persistence and dedication have made a lasting impact on both Bushfires NT and the wider community.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition of your outstanding service. 👏

Round Four of applications for the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) will close on Wednesday 1 July 2026.

The DRF is the Commonwealth’s flagship initiative for disaster resilience and risk reduction.

The Territory Government received $14.9 million through the DRF, to deliver a new multi-purpose community cyclone shelter to the Nhulunbuy community at a total cost of $30.2 million. The shelter will have a capacity of 1800 people. This will address the fact regional and remote communities located along the Northern Territory's coastline are vulnerable to cyclones and many lack the capacity to safely shelter a community's local population.

Do you have a proposal that will help your community guard themselves against the impacts of natural hazards across the Territory? Learn more about the DRF by visiting

A recent Bushfires NT staff forum brought operational and administrative staff togethers to share updates, build connections across regions, and strengthen a common understanding of priorities.

A majority of the time was spent on preparation and operational briefing for the upcoming bushfire season.

It combined leadership briefings, training, wellbeing sessions and expert presentations to build capability, improve safety awareness, and support staff through change.

One activity to build team chemistry was a challenge to build a spaghetti tower in a race against the clock!

What you need to know about the latest AFAC News Bushfire Outlook for Winter 2026

After an intense wet season, the Northern Territory is heading into a heightened bushfire risk period - particularly across Central Australia.

🌾 Large areas of grass growth will dry out over coming months, increasing fire risk in regions including Alice Springs, Barkly, Tennant Creek and surrounding areas.

🌴 The Top End is expected to see an average fire season, with fire danger periods beginning from mid-June but risks may increase later in the dry season.

⚠️ Now is the time to act:
✔️ Maintain 4m firebreaks around your property
✔️ Reduce fuel loads
✔️ Prepare a bushfire survival plan & emergency kit
✔️ Understand the Australian Warning System
