The Aboriginal Lands Trust Board stands in solidarity with the Kaurna Community and others opposed the redevelopment of the North Adelaide Golf Course.
This is the place where Kaurna first met colonists in South Australia, and the site of the first Aboriginal 'mission'. Most of the Trust's land estate is former Aboriginal 'missions' and 'reserves'.
The Trust Board strongly opposed the State Government's application under the Aboriginal Heritage Act to destroy any Aboriginal heritage at Possum Park that might be inconvenient to the redevelopment. This application was granted.
Cultural heritage is not just about trees, landscapes, or physical sites. It is living memory, identity, storylines, connection to ancestors, and the continuing expression of First Nations sovereignty and belonging.
Across South Australia, Aboriginal cultural heritage faces daily pressure and destruction from development and decision-making that fails to listen to or value Aboriginal voices, cultural authority and protection of Country.
Now that the trees have been cut down, the digging will begin. It is well known that the development area was used for burials of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. We are worried about what may come next.
The Trust Board acknowledges the strength and leadership of Kaurna people and their allies in standing up to protect Country, culture, and future generations.
We call on all governments, decision-makers, developers, and the broader community to:
• listen to First Nation voices and cultural authority
• respect and protect Aboriginal heritage in all its forms
• cultivate genuine partnerships with Traditional Owners that feature early engagement, honest consultation, and a willingness to change plans
• work towards mutually beneficial outcomes that values culture while achieving good outcomes - Aboriginal people are not against development or progress.
Aboriginal heritage is a dynamic record of the Earth's longest living culture. Once its destroyed it can never be replaced.
This is a moment for all South Australians to stand together and support the protection of Kaurna Country, culture, and heritage for generations to come.
