A TRAIL OF FAKE WEDDINGS!

Becc and Nathan weren't the only couple whose wedding Will had officiated.

Between March 2022 and April 2023, Will "married" five couples, all of whom were close friends or friends of friends. He charged each couple between $700 and $1,000.

Becc needed to get her passport renewed, and decided she would first change her surname. She contacted Births, Deaths and Marriages to get a copy of her marriage certificate, and when she didn't hear back, began chasing Will.

"He had started ghosting them a little bit, not replying as often, and that was stressing them out."

Eventually, at the suggestion of another friend, Becc and Nathan looked up Will's name on a list of registered civil celebrants published by the Attorney-General's Department, which is responsible for regulating marriage celebrants.

It wasn't there.
Will Cheesman enrolled in celebrant training, but never finished the course.!

Don’t get scammed by a fake celebrant!

Before you say ‘I Do’, do check that your celebrant is listed on the Attorney General’s database of all authorised marriage celebrants: www.ag.gov.au/families-and-marriage/marriage/find-marriage-celebrant

A fake marriage celebrant has been sentenced for defrauding five couples in Victoria.
The Melbourne man, 31, said ‘I do’ to pleading guilty to impersonating a Commonwealth officer and performing fake ceremonies solemnising five invalid marriages between March 2022 and April 2023. All marriages performed by the offender are considered invalid.

AFP officers began their investigation after the fifth couple reported the man, as they couldn’t find his name on the register of authorised celebrants.

The man was handed a six-month Community Corrections Order (CCO) with a single condition of performing 50 hours’ of community work.

The AFP has a zero-tolerance approach to individuals committing fraud, and other forms of corruption. The AFP will continue to work with its state and Commonwealth law enforcement partners to proactively target, identify, and disrupt fraudsters who are attempting to exploit and profit from members of the community.
