It was on this day in 2008, Corporal Mark Donaldson VC, from the Perth based Special Air Service Regiment, exposed himself to heavy Taliban fire to protect wounded Australian troops and rescue an Afghan interpreter. On the 16th of January 2009, Trooper Donaldson was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia by the Governor-General, becoming the first Australian to receive the award since the Vietnam War. 🇦🇺

Never forgotten

In memory of Private Grant Kirby and Private Tomas Dale, both from the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion (6RAR). On the 20th of August 2010, Private Kirby and Private Dale were on patrol during operations in the Baluchi Valley when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated killing both men instantly. Two other Australians were also severely wounded by the blast. Private Grant Kirby was a 35-year-old father of two girls from Brisbane, he was on his first deployment in Afghanistan, having previously deployed to Iraq and East Timor. Private Tomas Dale was aged 21, from Reynella in South Australia, he was on his first deployment in Afghanistan.
Our thoughts are with both families and friends today. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The brothers from Diggers MC South Oz had a great run up to Camp Andrew Russell having a sensational weekend.
It’s a bloody great spot open to all veterans and their families.
I’d like to congratulate our nom Scotty for earning his stage 3, well done brother.
On a sad note it was the last run for a good few months for our chapters founding president Dazz, as he heads overseas with his family.
Brother Dazz, you have been an amazing president, the effort and dedication you have shown to our club and especially your brothers at South Oz is a true testament to your fortitude and character, you are an absolutely staunch brother and are the definition of a true gentleman.
Enjoy Taiwan with your family and we will ride again soon.

With his “Clark Gable smile” and a Bren gun slung for patrol, Arthur Edwin “Slim” Bennett looks every bit the relaxed soldier in this photograph from northern New Guinea.

But Bennett’s story was anything but ordinary.

Born in Vulcan, NSW, and working as a retort operator before enlisting at Paddington, Bennett served with the 35th Battalion in New Guinea. On 11 August 1945, then-Sergeant Bennett was commanding a fighting patrol near the Gwalip Villages when his men came under fire from Japanese weapon pits.

Taking a Bren gun, Bennett crawled around to the flank. At close range, he stood up under fire, engaged the position, then crawled forward again before dashing into a weapon pit and throwing grenades into the next group of pits. His actions helped clear the enemy position without casualties to his own troops.

For his courage and disregard for his own safety during the fighting, Bennett was awarded the Military Medal. On 14 February 1946, at Vunacanau airstrip, he was formally decorated by Major General Kenneth Eather during a Pacific Islands Regiment parade.
