South Road has moved 👀

To make room for the lowered open motorway, sections of South Road have been shifted to a new alignment closer to Richmond Oval.

The open motorway section will be 2.7km long and connect the Northern and Southern tunnels.

As part of the T2D Project, we're upgrading the Richmond Road and Railway Terrace intersection to improve travel between the city and South Road.

We're upgrading the busy Richmond Road, Railway Terrace and Croydon Road intersection to improve travel between the city and South Road.

Key features of the upgrade include:

✅ A wider intersection with dedicated right and left turn lanes onto Railway Terrace (northbound), plus two through lanes in both directions.
✅ A wider Railway Terrace with dedicated left turn (eastbound) and right turn (westbound) lanes onto Richmond Road.
✅ Extended right turn slip lanes on Ashford and Hampton roads to improve traffic flow.
✅ An extra westbound lane on Richmond Road between Railway Terrace and Keswick Creek, providing two lanes in each direction along the length of Richmond Road.
✅ New dedicated bike lanes on all approaches to the intersection and along Richmond Road between Railway Terrace and Anzac Highway.

📍 Ashwin Parade Intersection

To help improve traffic flow during the construction of the T2D Project, both lanes on Ashwin Parade can now turn left onto South Road. The existing left turn to South Road and straight ahead movement to West Thebarton Road will remain open and unchanged.

In an Australian first, two additional Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) purpose-built to excavate cross passages will join the Project. Standing 4.1 metres tall, the fourth and fifth TBMs will construct cross passages every 120 metres, connecting the parallel tunnels.

💡Did you know?

The T2D Project is the first Australian tunnelling project to use two purpose-built Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to excavate cross passages. Standing at 4.1 metres tall, these are scaled-down versions of our three big TBMs - Mary, Catherine and Elizabeth.

And the first of two cross passage TBMs has arrived in Adelaide. 🚢

Before TBM Mary set off on her journey underground, we got a sneak peek into the massive machine – weighing approx. 3,500 tonnes and 100-metres long.

TBM Mary is officially on the move ➡️ 🎉

Operating 24/7, Mary will progress approximately 8-10 metres per day, with up to 20 specialised workers inside at any one time.

Mary’s first components arrived in Adelaide in October 2025 and since then, piece by piece, each component has been lifted into the launch box by a 500-tonne gantry crane before being assembled to carve out a non-stop South Road.
