World Su***de Prevention Day 10th of September

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we come together as a community to remember and honour those we have lost, hold space for those who may be struggling, and remind one another that no one should ever feel they have to walk alone.

Through coming together, we share our strength, compassion, culture and hope, creating a safe space to yarn, listen, connect and support one another.

We invite you to join us at Yitpi Yartapuultiku on Thursday, 10 September at 5:30 pm for a Candlelight Vigil.

The evening will close with a light supper and time to sit together as community.

🕯️ Please bring a candle in a jar to symbolise hope, remembrance and the light we carry for one another.

We were pretty excited to take delivery of our brand new Can-Am Australia & New Zealand defender SSV! She’s a beauty and I know our patrolling members are going to be pretty stoked to not have to drive the old Polaris anymore! Patrolling season starts in October and the beautiful sunshine this weekend AND a new SSV has got us excited about the season ahead! We want to give a big shout out to Masonic Charities and our friends at Semaphore Lodge for your very generous donation to make this happen! Our new equipment means we can better serve and protect our community!

Vale Dave Nelson.

It is with great sadness that North Haven Surf Life Saving Club acknowledges the passing of Dave Nelson, a truly significant figure in the history and foundation of our club.

Dave was one of the most influential people behind the original vision of establishing a surf lifesaving club at Taperoo Beach — a vision that ultimately evolved into the North Haven Surf Life Saving Club we know today.

Dave began his surf lifesaving journey at Semaphore SLSC, earning his Bronze Medallion in 1966 and competing in Rescue & Resuscitation, surf belt and surf races.

In 1967, Dave and Michael Gregurke became the driving forces behind establishing the Taperoo Beach Surf Life Saving Club, officially formed on 1 May 1967. Dave became the club’s inaugural Secretary, later serving as Club Captain, Publicity Officer and Chief Instructor.

Dave’s contribution went far beyond his official roles. He was a member of the club’s first R&R team, a mainstay in belt and surf swimming competitions, and played an important role in establishing the culture and identity of the young club.

He also recognised the importance of preserving our history, initiating the club’s first History Book and documenting the early story of the organisation — records that have helped ensure the origins of our club are not forgotten.

And then there were the famous discos at Largs Pier. From 1972, Dave was instrumental in organising hugely successful fundraising events, bringing some of Australia’s biggest bands of the era to local venues, including AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Skyhooks and Sherbet. These events raised more than $10,000 in just two years, an extraordinary achievement at the time and a vital contribution to the young club.

Dave’s vision, determination, leadership and willingness to get things done helped lay the foundations upon which North Haven Surf Life Saving Club has been built.

From Taperoo Beach to North Haven, Dave’s fingerprints are firmly embedded in our history.

On behalf of North Haven Surf Life Saving Club, we extend our deepest condolences to Dave’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thank you, Dave, for believing in the vision, for helping build something that has endured for almost 60 years, and for the legacy you leave behind.

Rest peacefully, Dave. Your contribution to our club will never be forgotten. 🤎🤍
