Sunday 7th of July is the beginning of NAIDOC Week and runs until July 14th. National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an increased opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

The 2024 National NAIDOC Week theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud – honouring the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the risk tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We seek to help keep the fire burning, and celebrate NAIDOC week with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

OARS are pleased to share that we have regained our funding for service. The South Australian Government made the announcement yesterday.

Early intervention initiatives, such as Don’t Become That Man aim to change the trajectory for individuals who may be at a higher risk of using violence, abuse and control.

Today is the International Day of Families, a part of National Families Week! Celebrating the vital role that families play in our society.

Families are a crucial factor in all the work that we do. Whether that be the families of our direct clients, or our clients as members of families. Families must also receive support, not only so they can support their loved one, but to also support and care for themselves.

Strengthening family groups and providing support at all critical transition points is vital for individual and community wellbeing, reducing harm, offending and victimisation.

🧡 Providing support and intervention to people who are using violence, control or abuse in their relationship can have a positive impact on families, and reducing future harm to families. Please call our service on 1300 24 34 13 for information or referral options.

Yesterday was not only the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, but also Closing The Gap Day.

OARS joined the community event hosted by Sonder and Nunkuwarrin Yunti on Kaurna Land at the Adelaide Showgrounds, placing equality and inclusion at the forefront.

Closing the Gap is a national strategy aimed to reduce indigenous disadvantage with respect to life expectancy, child mortality, access to early childhood education, educational achievement and employment outcomes. Highlighted in our work at OARS Community Transitions is the over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system, and significant impact of DFSV on Aboriginal Women (experiencing violence at 3.1 times the rate of non-Indigenous women) and working in partnership with Aboriginal people, staff, clients and community to engage in innovative and culturally safe and responsive service deliver to help close the gap.
