On Thursday at 6 pm SA time Solidarity branches nationally are hosting an online book launch with Héctor Puente Sierra from the UK, featuring his book “Revolution and Counter Revolution in the Spanish Civil War”.

Ninety years ago, a military coup led by far right generals was launched to crush Spain's parliamentary republic. It would lead to civil war and revolution, as workers rose up in arms and fought for a new world. The war and the revolution were the culmination of years of struggles, where a rapidly expanding working class and the forces of reaction tested their strength. Written from a Marxist perspective, Héctor Puente Sierra's new history of the Spanish Civil War aims to uncover the deep class tensions that led to this explosion and shaped its course.

Smaller crowd than we hoped, but there was still a spirited rally against the racists of March for Australia on Kaurna Yerta/Adelaide today. Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna elder Moogy Sumner welcomed us to country. Speeches followed by Kaurna elder Janette Millera, Jordan who helped organise the large student Hanson protest here (next 17 Sep), Shai from Trans Justice Adelaide, Habibah describing how she was prosecuted for publishing pro-Palestine content in a student newspaper, and retired BLF/CFMEU official Allen Harris with tales of union support for First Nations and migrant struggles over the years. We voted to go ahead with the planned march, and kept the energy up with vigorous chanting all the way to Tarntanyangga. It’s clear we need to reach more deeply into the community to connect with everyone threatened by the growing far right, and also make the argument around the left to prioritise street protests against them.

Useful article by Solidarity comrade Tom Orsag about CPE Capital, which through its subsidiaries owns 15 manufacturing sites in Australia that contribute to the F-35 program. The company received a $150m loan from a government fund with links to manufacturing union officials. Its founder Bill Ferris has an Order of Australia for philanthropy!
