A moment to celebrate in the East Kimberley.

Traditional Owners have secured formal recognition of their rights and interests across 961 square kilometres of Country through the Nganjuwarr consent determination.

Delivered on Country by the Federal Court, the determination recognises the rights and interests of Kija and Ngarinyin Traditional Owners following negotiations led by Nganjuwarr applicants, with support from the Kimberley Land Council and the State Government.

More than a legal milestone, this outcome celebrates the enduring connection Traditional Owners have to Country. It supports Nganjuwarr people to continue leading decisions that strengthen culture, care for Country, and create lasting opportunities for future generations.

It’s World Ranger Day!

This year's theme, 'Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet', recognises the vital role rangers play in protecting natural and cultural heritage in an increasingly complex and changing environment.

The ILSC recognises and celebrates the contribution of rangers who care for Country, protect cultural heritage and manage some of Australia's most significant land and sea Country.

Across the Australia, Indigenous rangers combine cultural knowledge and contemporary land and sea management practices to protect biodiversity, manage fire, monitor ecosystems and maintain important cultural sites.

For more than four decades, Bega Garnbirringu Health Service Incorporated has been supporting the health and wellbeing of Indigenous peoples across the Goldfields-Esperance region.

Today marks an exciting new chapter with the opening of the Bega Health Hub.

Bringing health and support services together under one roof, the new hub will help strengthen access to culturally safe, holistic care for the community, now and into the future.

Did you hear the news from last week? The Akeyulerre Healing Centre has been crowned the global winner in the new building category at the 2026 International Union of Architects (UIA) Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards, selected from 150 entries worldwide!

This global recognition demonstrates the strength of First Nations-led design grounded in culture, Country and community priorities.

Owned and operated by Arrernte families in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), the centre supports traditional healing, bush medicine production, cultural education, employment and community wellbeing while reflecting the identity and values of Arrernte Country.

The dedication of the Umpila Indigenous Protected Area marks an important step in supporting Traditional Owner-led management of Country in Cape York.

Indigenous Protected Areas play a vital role in protecting cultural and environmental values while creating opportunities for Indigenous employment, skills development and long-term community benefit.

Through activities such as cultural site management, biodiversity monitoring and Caring for Country initiatives, Traditional Owners continue to lead the stewardship of some of Australia's most significant landscapes.

The Umpila IPA highlights the important role Indigenous Protected Areas play in conservation, cultural continuity and economic participation, ensuring Traditional Owners continue to care for Country for future generations.

The ILSC's Eastern Division Office team recently had the opportunity to spend time on Country with the Gudang Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation in the Northern Peninsula Area.

The team's visit included Pajinka, the northernmost point of the Australian mainland, the iconic Jardine River Crossing and Punsand Bay. These visits provided a valuable opportunity to listen, learn and strengthen relationships while discussing opportunities to support community aspirations.

It’s been a whole year since the ILSC joined Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation on (Stratford, QLD) to celebrate the opening of their multi-purpose Yirrganydji Collective Hub.

The hub was a landmark achievement for DWAC, bringing with it enhanced social, economic, environmental and cultural opportunities for the community. It was also solely funded by the ILSC.

NAIDOC Week 2026 came to a close on Sunday 12 July and we’re now taking the time to reflect on the significance of its 50th anniversary and this year's theme, '50 Years of Deadly'.

Held from 5–12 July, NAIDOC Week honours the achievements, resilience and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

First Nations peoples have always maintained a deep and enduring connection to Country. That connection continues to strengthen communities, sustain the world's oldest living cultures, and inspire future generations in the pursuit of recognition, opportunity and self-determination.

The 2026 theme is especially significant. '50 Years of Deadly' recognises the proud First Nations communities who have driven, and continue to drive, positive change within their communities and across Australia.

On 10 July, the ILSC Head Office team joined NAIDOC SA's Family Fun Day, connecting with community and celebrating together. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the stall. We hope you enjoyed the rock and shirt painting activities!
