Flashback Friday: Statue of Captain Matthew Flinders

This statue was built to commemorate the life of Captain Matthew Flinders RN and his extensive contribution to the exploration and mapping of a large section of South Australia's coastline in 1802.

It was a belated memorial to an explorer and navigator whose detailed and meticulous work in exploring and mapping the 'unknown coast' between the head of the Great Australian Bight and the Murray Mouth has no equal in Australia's maritime history.

The bronze statue was created by English sculptor Fredrick Brook Hitch. Based on a likeness from portraits and miniatures, the statue displays Flinders in a standing thoughtful pose, wearing full naval regalia, surrounded by instruments used in his exploration pursuits.

The red Murray Bridge granite plinth was designed by the Architect-in Chief, Alfred Edward Simpson.

The Governor, Sir Alexander Hore-Ruthven unveiled the statue on 12 April 1934 at a ceremony attended by dignitaries and notable citizens.
