All aboard! Last week, a busload of staff and volunteers from 18 community centres across SA went on the road to explore five centres across Adelaide's Inner South and North.

Along the way we shared lunch with a playgroup and choir, poked our heads into some men's sheds, chatted passionately about adult community education, grabbed coffee with a walking group, spotted community art in every shape and form, marvelled at a frog-shaped pizza oven hiding in a community garden, munched on scones, and fuelled up on lollies along the way, all to the soundtrack of a playlist everyone on the bus had created.

Not too long ago, locals in Clare came together to dream, pool resources, and together create what is now the Clare Community Centre.

Opened in November 2025, this community centre has gone from strength to strength. Beginning with a toy library and playgroup, they have now expanded to be a youth hang out zone, tertiary study hub, community craft, sewing and meditation site, Foodbank host, driving support with Wheels in Motion, and a centre for community to gather and plan events like the Sustainability Festival and Youth Week!

It is a joy watching this centre grow, and watching the way community are leading, shaping, and creating opportunities together.

Last week, the Community Centres SA team was proud and privileged to host a community of practice on behalf of DHS - Human Services SA, bringing together over 200 practitioners across seven DHS-funded programs. What a thrill it was to see so many faces in one place, all for the same purpose - reinvigorating community development approaches in regions across South Australia.

Facilitated by the experts at Jeder Institute, ‘Bringing it Together’ encouraged people to think about how they can support their communities to design, develop, deliver and maintain great community outcomes. Attendees were supported to think broadly about who else in their region they could work with to achieve a real 1+1=3 outcome.

A huge thank you to those who spent the day with us, the Hon Katrine Hildyard MP for speaking, the wonderful Spirit in Unity for their Welcome to Country, and to DHS for investing in the partnerships and collaboration that have evolved as a result.

The Australian Government will provide $200 million over three years from 2026-27 to establish the Inclusive Communities Fund (the Fund).

The Fund will create more opportunities for people with disability, including NDIS participants, to take part in social, recreational, arts, sporting, cultural and other community activities. The Fund will achieve this by providing funding for community organisations to strengthen their capability to offer more inclusive and accessible services. The Fund will not pay for the delivery of community activities.

The design of the Fund will be informed by consultation with the disability community.

Your feedback will help the Australian Government decide how the Fund should be designed.

Submissions for this consultation are open from 3 August 2026 to 31 August 2026.

Roller skating, Zumba, Drama club, Italian lessons, Ukelele, 24/7 tertiary hub, Heritage centre, Youth bands, Podcasting, Business hub, library, cafe, and the list goes on. Wow, the Town of Gawler has got it going on!

We were recently treated to a tour across two of the town’s community sites - the Gawler Sport and Community Centre and Gawler Civic Centre. The teams working across the community spaces in Gawler have a passion for partnership and uplifting local association leadership, and this shows in their way of working and bringing community together.

We loved experiencing the beautifully renovated Civic Centre in the heart of Gawler, which blends the new with the heritage in a spectacular way and embeds community gathering at its heart with the cafe and phenomenal community art project piece created with Caity from Dustin-Koa Art. If you visit, say hi to the youth space mascot Barry Normal for us 😉
