AND THAT'S A WRAP: Have you noticed something new at Penfold Park? 👀

In recent weeks we've rolled out a new pictorial "wrap" on the Penfold Park public toilets, which enhances visual amenity and provides a spotlight on one of our wonderful native species. Seen here is the beautiful Blue-banded Bee!

When you think of bees, you often think of honey. But did you know there are hundreds of bee species native to Australia? None of which live in swarms, produce honey or have a queen. Meet the native bee, Australia’s homegrown pollinator. These quiet achievers are very different to European honeybees and are solitary creatures, playing a crucial role in the pollination of many native plant species.

Our next wrap will be installed at Brock Reserve and will highlight another beautiful native species. Stay tuned!

PLANTING DAY SUCCESS: We would like to thank everyone who braved the cold, wet weather last week to attend our Community Planting Day out at Hewitt Avenue Reserve!

This small pocket of open space in Rose Park has recently been redeveloped, with new features including a brand-new pathway, a drink fountain, a shade tree and two wicking beds. There's more on the way too!

REFLECTING ON RECONCILIATION: We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended our Reconciliation Week events recently! We were excited to see such a great turnout for both the Aboriginal art workshop and the children's event in the Burnside Library, which provided great opportunities to build understanding and respect for ongoing Reconciliation efforts.

Thank you to Luke and Jie for their Kumu Kaaru presentation to the kids and Cory Turner for hosting the Aboriginal art workshop.

ENROL TO VOTE IN COUNCIL ELECTIONS: Council Elections are coming in October!

It may seem a long way off, but it's important to check your enrolment to ensure you can have your say.

If you’re signed up for state and federal elections, then you’re automatically good to go for local council ones. However if you’ve moved house, changed your name, or just turned 18, you’ll need to make sure your details are up to date. Head to www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/enrolment/council-voters-roll to check your enrolment now.

The voters roll closes on Friday 31 July, so don't get caught out!

HISTORY FESTIVAL: Thank you to everyone who participated in South Australia's History Festival last month here in the City of Burnside. This year we hosted 10 great events, with almost 300 people attending and getting involved!

The program included a mix of talks, guided walks, workshops and research sessions, delivered in partnership with local organisations. It was fantastic to see people getting involved to explore our local historic sites and share stories.

Even though History Festival has come to an end, it doesn't mean the past has to stay there! We are proud to offer a free Local History Enquiry service to the community, with in-person research assistance available every Monday afternoon at Burnside Library from 1.30 pm - 4.30 pm.

WINDBACK WEDNESDAY: The road known as Ilfracombe Drive in Wattle Park takes its name from Ilfracombe House, which once stood near the area.

The house was built circa 1847 for Dr James George Nash, South Australia's second Colonial Surgeon, on the cooler slopes of his 40 acre property close to where the Wattle Park Reservoir is located today.

Dr Nash named the home “Ilfracombe” after the seaside resort in Devon, England. The Nash family lived there until returning to England in 1856, after which the property passed through several tenants.
