πŸ’› SEPTEMBER | SU***DE AWARENESS MONTH

September is Su***de Awareness Month, and for Dalkeith CFS, this one hits close to home.

Our brigade knows firsthand the heartbreak that su***de leaves behind.

We have lost one of our own β€” a firefighter, a good friend, a mate and a valued member of the Dalkeith CFS family.

That loss is a reminder that sometimes the people around us can be carrying battles we cannot see.

In emergency services, we’re accustomed to being the ones who show up when somebody needs help. But sometimes, we need someone to show up for us too.

So this September, check on your mates.

Don’t just ask, β€œHow are you?”
Ask, β€œHow are you going β€” really?”

Then give them the time and space to answer.

Listen without judgement. Stay connected. And if you’re the one struggling, please reach out. You don’t have to carry everything on your own.

β€œCarry each other’s burdens.” β€” Galatians 6:2

πŸ’› This month, we remember those we’ve lost, stand beside those who are struggling, and remind everyone in our brigade and community:

You matter. Your life matters. Please stay.

πŸ“ž Lifeline β€” 13 11 14
πŸ“ž Su***de Call Back Service β€” 1300 659 467
🚨 Immediate danger β€” 000

Dalkeith CFS β€” looking after our community, and looking after each other.

❀️ **DID YOU KNOW?**

Women are less likely than men to receive CPR from a bystander during a cardiac arrest.

**Why?**

Research has identified several barriers that can make people hesitate to perform CPR on women, including:

πŸ‘‰ Fear of inappropriate touching
πŸ‘‰ Concerns about accusations of s*xual assault
πŸ‘‰ Hesitation around exposing or touching the chest
πŸ‘‰ Uncertainty about where to place their hands or AED pads

But when someone is **unresponsive and not breathing normally**, starting CPR quickly can save their life.

πŸš‘ **A cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency.**

Don't let embarrassment or fear stop you from helping.

**CPR is performed the same way regardless of s*x β€” push hard, push fast, and use an AED as soon as one is available.**

❀️ **Every person deserves the same chance of survival.**

**Beyond Support & Training**

Did you know?
Women are less likely to receive CPR in the event of them having a Cardiac Arrest Than Men

And why is this?
People believe that if they start CPR on a woman who has breasts, they fear they will get sued for inappropriate touching, accusations of s*xual assault are a key deterrent, which is incorrect at the event of someone having a cardiac arrest, it is classed as implied consent unless appropriate paperwork is physically seen for a DNR.

πŸ”¨ Tradies National Health Month is the perfect time to expand your training offerings and make a bigger impact in your community.

While physical safety has always been a priority on site, mental health challenges continue to affect workers across the construction, trades and industrial sectors.

That's why more training providers are adding:
βœ… Introduction to Mental Health (non-accredited)
βœ… Mental Health Support in the Workplace and Community (non-accredited)
βœ… HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (accredited)
βœ… HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (accredited)

By offering both physical and mental health training, you can help workplaces create safer, healthier and more supportive environments for their teams.

Talk to the ABC First Aid team about adding mental health training to your scope today.
