It's the conclusion of 2026 National Skills Week. We want to celebrate today with a simple photo collage celebrating our students and staff who are at the heart of VET, and deserving of the accolades in a celebratory week like this.

Thank you to everyone in the VET sector for your commitment to education, and of course to those students who are commited to being lifelong learners; learning new skills, upkeeping existing skills and using their training for purposeful careers.

National Skills Week 2026: Life Changing

Skills can change a career. They can change a workplace. They can change a life.

This National Skills Week, we're celebrating the life-changing impact of VET, from someone taking their first steps into the disability and horticulture sectors, to experienced workers building new skills and confidence.

At SALC, we see that impact every day.

In our latest sample of students completing the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), approx. 65% went on to gain employment with Minda, while a further 25% gained employment with other disability service providers.

Behind those numbers are people starting new careers, building confidence and putting their skills into practice. And in disability support, those skills have an impact well beyond the learner, helping to provide skilled, safe and person-centred support to people with disability. A qualification can open the door to a new career.

That's why this year's National Skills Week theme, Life Changing, means so much to us.

Meet Deb! She is one of SALC’s Certificate III in Individual Support and Certificate IV in Disability Support trainers. She also delivers CPI Safety Intervention training to Minda’s workforce, helping staff build the practical knowledge and skills they need to safely and effectively support people.

While Deb is the newest trainer on the SALC team, she’s actually no stranger to the business. She actually worked here around 10 years ago, which means she was part of SALC before any of the current team!

Deb brings more than 20 years of hands-on experience in the disability sector. She’s also a highly qualified educator, with teaching qualifications and a Master of Disability Studies. Importantly, Deb continues to work part-time as a disability support worker, so her learners benefit from someone who understands both the theory and what actually happens on the job.

When she’s not training, Deb enjoys getting out on her bike and cycling.

She brings plenty of energy, experience and a genuine passion for the disability sector to her work and we’re very glad to have her back at SALC and as part of the team!

We’re thrilled to announce that our partnership programme with Golden Grove High School for AHC10322 Certificate I in Horticulture is a finalist in the 2026 SA Training Awards!

Designed specifically for students with disability, the programme uses the school environment as a live training site, giving students the opportunity to develop practical horticulture skills through meaningful, hands-on learning.

A huge congratulations and thank you to our partners at Golden Grove High School, along with the industry workplaces and everyone else who has contributed to the programme.

The theme of our application was Innovation through Collaboration, and we think this programme is a great example of exactly that.

Meet Alexis! She has been part of SALC since 2019, and during that time has become the backbone of several accredited and workforce training functions.

Alexis holds degrees from China, the USA and Australia. Before joining Minda, she was an English language teacher at Henan University in China, teaching in transnational programmes linked with Victoria University, Monash University and Miami University. Her academic background spans English literature, teaching and international business.

Today, Alexis is passionate about supporting people to pursue meaningful study and employment opportunities through their training at SALC. She often recognises Minda employees from having first met and interviewed them when they were applying for Certificate III Individual Support, and then gets to see where their training has taken them. She feels proud of their career achievements at Minda.

Along her other responsibilities, Alexis supports SALC’s Quality and Compliance activities and is likely to begin delivering some training sessions of her own in the near future.

Meet Alan! He has been part of the SALC team since 2018, and over the past eight years has been instrumental in building our horticulture training programs from the ground up.

As our Horticulture Trainer, Alan led the development of both our AHC20422 Certificate II and AHC30722 Certificate III in Horticulture programs, helping establish a high-quality training pathway that continues to grow from strength to strength. His passion, expertise and commitment have played a huge role in shaping horticulture training at SALC.

Throughout his career, Alan has worked with people from all walks of life, including school students, adult learners and those with all kinds of learning needs and styles. His patient and practical approach helps students develop confidence alongside valuable, job-ready skills.

Today, Alan is delivering two Certificate II in Horticulture groups, one based here at North Brighton and another with students from Golden Grove Secondary School, inspiring the next generation of horticulture professionals.

Alan's dedication has helped hundreds of students discover a passion for horticulture, and we're proud to have him on the SALC team!

Meet Sumith! With more than seven years at SALC, and even longer with Minda, Sumith has built a reputation as one of our most experienced and highly regarded trainers.

He currently delivers CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support to our VET in Schools students across Adelaide and Whyalla. Alongside this, he also delivers Minda's behaviour support training, helping disability support workers build the knowledge and skills they need to provide safe, person-centred support.

Sumith holds a Master of Social Work and brings extensive experience across the community services and disability sectors. His practical knowledge, supportive teaching style, and genuine passion for developing the workforce make him an outstanding trainer.

Our current CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support intake is almost full. Our next course commences in September, with information sessions being held throughout August.
