As the weather becomes colder, residents are being urged to take extra caution in and around the home.

Firstly, it is vital residents have at least one working smoke alarm installed in their home. Our research has revealed that only half of all homes in NSW have a working smoke alarm.

Further with the colder weather you should be:

Checking electric blankets for damage or frayed cords before placing on the bed, and never go to bed or leave home with your electric blanket on – always switch it off first. If in doubt, contact a licenced electrician.

Not overloading powerboards – high power loads appliances can cause powerboards to overheat and catch alight, with potentially tragic consequences.

Cleaning the lint filter from your clothes dryer each time you use it.

Ensuring not to overheat wheat bags in the microwave. Never use wheat bags to warm your bed. There is the potential for them to start a fire.

About 6.50am this morning (Sunday 2 August 2026), Fire and Rescue Station 503 Wollongong and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 241 Bulli were called to a bush fire at Towradgi Beach. Further resources were called from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 207 Albion Park Tanker 207 (On Call Firefighters) due to access issues.
