Week FIVE of our Youth Internship Program!

This week, we took 20 students to the Shellharbour Surf Life Saving Club 🏄

Our Youth Internship Program provides young people with valuable skills and an introduction to the emergency services sector, while exploring ways to stay safe and opportunities to volunteer or build a career helping their communities.

A huge thank you to the volunteers at Shellharbour Surf Life Saving Club for sharing their knowledge, experiences, and passion for water safety.

The students gained a firsthand insight into the important role Surf Life Saving plays in keeping our community safe and the many pathways available to get involved.

⚠️ Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS

Issued at 4:31 pm EST on Monday 10 August 2026

Damaging winds along the Great Dividing Range and coastal plains including Newcastle and Wollongong.

Weather Situation: Vigorous westerly flow has extended along much of the Great Dividing Range today in the wake of a cold front. Winds are expected to shift southwesterly with the passage of a trough overnight into Tuesday, gradually easing later into the day.

⚠️ For the ILLAWARRA COAST, including WOLLONGONG: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are possible from later this evening into early Tuesday morning.

SEVERE WEATER WARNING - DAMAGING WINDS

Issued at 4:46 pm EST on Sunday 9 August 2026

Damaging winds over alpine areas today, extending broadly across eastern NSW on Monday.

Safety advice
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

🔸Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
🔸Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
🔸Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
🔸Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.

🚨 A new national warning system is being tested TODAY across Australia with NSW residents receiving alerts at 2pm.

Your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.
The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.

The AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

⚠️ If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

A huge congratulations to Ian, who has recently turned 18 and is currently completing his HSC, an exciting and demanding time, and he’s absolutely smashing it!

Ian first joined the NSW SES Shellharbour City Unit through the 10 week Youth Internship Program in 2024. It didn’t take long to sign on as a full member at just 16 years old.

Recently, Ian achieved something truly outstanding, successfully passing the highly challenging Flood Rescue Operator training. This is no small accomplishment.

As a Flood Rescue Operator, Ian is now trained to assist during flood emergencies. These roles often involve helping evacuate isolated residents, rescuing people and animals from dangerous floodwaters, operating specialist equipment, and rescuing motorists trapped in flooded vehicles. It’s demanding, high-risk work that requires fitness, skill, teamwork, and courage.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Ian is also serving as a Cadet Under Officer with the Air Force Cadets, showing his dedication to service.

👏 Well done, Ian! You’re an absolute legend and an inspiring example of what young people can achieve.
