Not all flowers are wildlflowers - some are garden escaping weeds like these freesias. These pretty but pesky plant thrives in our bushlands.
Not only do they produce hundreds of seeds per plant, they also reproduce vegetatively via corms along the stems. Unfortunately, they are still widely available as a garden plant as it is easy to establish and, as they die back in summer, they need little watering.

Ongoing effective control of Cape broom aka Montpellier Broom (Genista monspessulana) was really exciting to see during our Winter Weeds Blitz. This is particularly evident in the bushland behind TAFE & Kalianna (Gap Rd), where previously this area was heavily infested with Cape Broom. Whilst the biocontrol has not completely eliminated broom from the area, most plants show reduced vigour, stunted growth and foliage that has been eaten by the insect. Cape Broom Psyllid (Arytinnis hakani) feeds on the sap of the plant's growing tips and leaves and lowers seed output. This bug was brought to the area in 2015-2016 and seems to be working. 🐛 Another bio-control, the Cape Broom moth's caterpillar (Genus Uresiphita) also occurs around Albury-Wodonga.

Our Winter Weeds Blitz results are in - 68 hours of volunteer time over 33 hectares involving 11 volunteers !! Community in action with big results. CONGRATULATIONS to our hard working team, especially the Thursday session stalwarts and AlburyCity.
Species removed (either pulled or cut & poisoned): 🌿Bamboo 🌿Watsonia 🌿Privet (broadleaf & small-leaf) 🌿Hawthorn 🌿Cape Broom 🌿Cotoneaster.

Aside from the large clump of bamboo next to the water tank and the significant patch of watsonia, most work was in areas FofNCH has covered in previous years. It was satisfying to see how our follow-up work is really having an impact and the Box-gum woodland is being reclaimed.
A big thank you to the Albury City staff for their enthusiastic work on Thursday afternoons during winter. They contributed 24 hours of Albury City crew time plus tools, herbicides and disposal.

We'll work in the mauve marked area of the map. This will be our final Thursday for the group's Winter Weeding blitz.

Great work last week from our volunteers, where we removed lots of small privets from the Range Rd area of the Hill. On a beautiful sunny day, the early wildflowers of the Hill were starting to appear. Lots of Hardenbergia and Hovea now providing some colour. Spring must be just around the corner. 🫶
