The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) has released its Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Spring 2026, identifying an extended fire season and above average fire danger across the Top End, Arnhem and Savanna regions.
The Top End wet season is expected to begin later than average, extending the bushfire season into November, with fire danger expected to peak during September and October.
Elevated fire potential is also forecast across Central Australia, with extensive fuel loads expected to drive increased fire activity in the Barkly, Tanami and Simpson Desert regions. The Barkly and Tanami districts are expected to enter their peak fire danger period in October and November, while the Simpson Desert is forecast to experience above average fire potential from September.
The outlook notes that above average vegetation growth following the 2025-26 wet season has resulted in significant fuel loads across much of the Territory, particularly in the Barkly and southern regions. Areas where grass fuels remain unburnt for one year or longer are expected to face the highest fire potential.
Commissioner of NT Fire and Emergency Services Andrew Warton said the outlook was a timely reminder for Territorians to prepare now.

"The outlook tells us conditions are in place for a challenging spring bushfire season across large parts of the Territory, particularly where grass fuels remain unburnt and fully cured," Commissioner Warton said.
"With extensive fuel loads across Central Australia and a delayed wet season expected to extend the Top End fire season, Territorians need to prepare now for the conditions forecast over the coming months."
โ€œBushfire behaviour is influenced by three key factors: weather, topography and fuel load. We canโ€™t control the weather or the landscape, but we can reduce fuel loads and mitigate the risks.
โ€œMany bushfires are caused by human activity and are preventable. Under the conditions forecast over the coming months, a single spark can quickly escalate into a significant bushfire.
โ€œNow is the time to clear your property, maintain your firebreaks, make sure firefighting equipment is accessible and maintained, and review your bushfire survival plan.โ€

NT Fire and Emergency Services encourage Territorians to:

โ€ข Review your bushfire survival plan and ensure all household members understand it.
โ€ข Maintain firebreaks at least four metres wide around your property.
โ€ข Reduce fuel loads and ensure firefighting equipment is accessible and maintained.
โ€ข Check Fire Danger Ratings and Permit to Burn requirements before undertaking activities that could start a fire.
โ€ข Stay informed through SecureNT, ABC Radio and official Bushfires NT and NT Fire and Rescue Service social media channels.

Day #02 - National Youth Volunteer Weekโœจ

National Youth Volunteer Week highlights the power of young people to lead, inspire, and create change. This year's theme, Your Year to Lead, recognises the many ways young volunteers are stepping forward to strengthen their communities.

Meet Harry and learn about his volunteering journey. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿš’

"When I joined the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service as a volunteer, I was looking for a way to give back to my community, learn new skills, and challenge myself. What I didn't expect was how much it would shape me as a person and the incredible opportunities it would provide.

Since becoming a volunteer, I've had the privilege of working alongside some truly amazing people. The friendships, teamwork, and support within NTFRS are unlike anything I've experienced before. Everyone is committed to helping each other succeed, and being part of such a dedicated team has been one of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering.

One of the highlights of my journey was deploying to Victoria earlier this year to assist with firefighting. It was an incredible experience that allowed me to work alongside emergency service personnel from across Australia, contribute to communities in need, and further develop my skills in a challenging environment. The photos attached are from my time in Victoria during the fires, and they represent memories and experiences that I will never forget.๐Ÿ™Œ

Volunteering with NTFRS has given me opportunities I never imagined possible. It has helped me build confidence, develop valuable life skills, and be part of something much bigger than myself.

To other young people who may be considering volunteering, I would encourage you to take the leap. Whether you're looking to learn new skills, make lifelong friends, gain unique experiences, or simply give back to your community, volunteering can open doors you never knew existed. You don't need to have all the answers or experience before you start. Just bring a willingness to learn and a desire to help others. The rewards are far greater than you could ever expect.

Volunteering has been one of the best decisions I've made, and I would encourage anyone thinking about it to get involved and see where the journey takes you" ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ‘

Just after midnight this morning, our crews were paged to a large grass fire in Illparpa.

On arrival, our members got straight to work alongside NT Fire and Rescue Service careers with crews and resources stretched to the max as everyone worked to get the fire under control.

After a few hours, crews had managed to catch up with the fire and homes were no longer under threat. The focus then shifted to backburning and protecting Blatherskite Park Alice Springs. With very limited clear firebreaks in place, this was no easy task and extra hands were brought in to help from Alice Springs Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.

As the morning went on, strong winds made conditions even more challenging, with crews at the ready with hoses to protect the Riding for the Disabled Associationโ€™s horses and surrounding area.

After almost 9 hours on the fireground, some very welcome heavy rain finally arrived and gave everyone the helping hand they needed.

A long night and morning for everyone involved, but a great effort by all crews working together to get the job done.

Letโ€™s make this Territory Day safe for everyone, including emergency crews, your family, neighbours, and pets.

We ask Territorians to plan ahead, celebrate safely, and help reduce the risk of fires due to fireworks.

Before the celebrations begin:
โœ… Clean your gutters.
โœ… Wet down your lawn and garden beds.
โœ… Remove rubbish and flammable materials from around your home.
โœ… Cool fireworks completely before disposal.

While fireworks are fun, they can be dangerous. Take care when using them. Before lighting fireworks, take a few precautions around your home, including clearing flammable material and having water nearby.

๐ŸŒณ Chainsaw Course - Part 1 ๐ŸŒณ

What a day! Our volunteers have started completing their Chainsaw Operations Course.

For some members this is brand new learning, while for others it is a valuable refresher to build on existing skills and maintain competency.

Chainsaw qualifications are an important skill for firefighters. While chainsaw work is more commonly associated with the Northern Territory Emergency Service (NTES), these skills can be invaluable on the fireground when access needs to be gained, hazards removed, or vegetation cleared to support firefighting operations.

The course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills to safely operate, maintain and transport chainsaws, assess hazards, and carry out cutting operations in a controlled and safe manner. It also provides additional capability should our volunteers be called upon to assist NTES during emergency events.

It's great to see our volunteers continuing to develop their skills and capabilities to better support our community when it matters most. Well done to everyone taking part in the training today!

Part 2 coming in a few weeks!
