🖤 Commemorating Marjane Satrapi (1969–2026)
Today we honour the life and legacy of Marjane Satrapi, the French‑Iranian artist, writer, and filmmaker whose groundbreaking memoir Persepolis reshaped how the world understands Iran, girlhood, resistance, and the power of storytelling.

Satrapi passed away in Paris at the age of 56, with tributes flowing from across the world recognising her as “a leading figure in French culture and an artist devoted to freedom”

Her later works, including Chicken with Plums, Embroideries, Radioactive, and Woman, Life, Freedom, continued her lifelong commitment to amplifying truth, challenging oppression, and centering women’s voices.

Satrapi’s influence reaches far beyond the page. She showed generations of readers — including many here in Alice Springs — that comics can be literature, that art can be activism, and that personal stories can change how we see the world.

📚 Explore her works at the library — and revisit the stories that continue to inspire readers across the globe.

We’re not saying we’re slow at typing… but this video might suggest otherwise 😅

Watch us painfully type out a comment on the New Library Consultation page while you sit there thinking, “I could’ve done that in half the time.”

Go on then - prove it. We challenge you to beat our typing speed ⌨️💨

The survey takes just a few clicks, with a quick 1–5 rating and space to share your thoughts - no essay required (unless you really want to impress).

📅 Closes Friday 5 June 2026

Endurance. 📚🏁
The Finke Desert Race isn’t just told on the track - it lives in stories, film and across the Alice Springs Public Library collection.

Alongside Endurance by Toby Price Racing our special Alice Springs Collection features a range of Finke Desert Race materials - including iconic DVDs that capture decades of racing, people and memories.

And you can experience it on the big screen! 🎬
Finke: There and Back will be screening at the Night Markets ft. Finke Desert Race at the Deckchair Cinema (Reflection Pond – near Alice Plaza).

As we celebrate 50 years of the Finke Desert Race, we’re also supporting the Tracks and Trails Survey - a chance for everyone to share their Finke story.

Whether you’ve raced, spectated, attended the Night Markets, or simply have a favourite memory - we want to hear from you.

Today would have marked Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry’s 90th birthday! Best known for his epic western Lonesome Dove and his moving tragicomedy Terms of Endearment, McMurtry had a long and varied literary career that moved through multiple genres. From cowboy camps to rural highschools to the drawing-rooms of urban socialites, he examined the human condition with empathy, wit, grit and a refreshing lack of sentimentality. At the library, you can explore his writing through the Lonesome Dove quartet, the Houston novels, the Thalia trilogy, and the Berrybender Narratives—all available to borrow. Drop in, browse the shelves, and take home a great McMurtry read today!

May 28th would have been Patrick White’s 114th birthday. The only Australian author to have yet won the Nobel Prize for Literature, White stands tall as one of Australia’s greatest literary voices. His powerful novels, including Eye of the Storm, The Tree of Man and The Vivisector, continue to shape Australian literature and storytelling. Why not mark the occasion by picking up one of his works from the library?
