The Gallery's first annual Sculpture Prize will be launched in December this year. In conjunction with Rotary SWR & Macleay Valley Coast it will be held in the Gallery and grounds of the Gallery and Maritime Precinct.

The heritage listed Maritime Precinct in South West Rocks includes the Gallery which is housed in the Pilot House, the Maritime Museum, Visitor Information Centre and the Arts & Crafts Cottage.

The Sculpture Prize 'Sculptures Rock' will run for three weeks from Monday 16th December 2024 to Sunday 5th January 2025 in conjunction with the Gallery’s Members’ Exhibition.

With a prize pool of $16,000, this is a fabulous opportunity to exhibit in one of the most beautiful locations on the Mid North Coast.

Prize categories
Large Outdoor prize(must be larger than 80cm in any direction and be for outdoor display) - $6,500
Large Outdoor Highly Commended - $500
Small Prize (no larger than 80cm in any direction) - $6,500
Small Highly Commended - $500
People's Choice - $2,000
All prizes are non-acquisitive

An oversized kaleidoscope suspended in space creating a temporal portal, reflecting ways of viewing. The Vibrascope has been retrofitted to use wave frequency and interplay between light and sounds waves by combining them.

Through these simple devices such as kaleidoscopes invites imagination and divergent thinking beyond an empirical reality. Stating we do not all view the world through just one archetypal lens.

is currently showing Ancestral Patterns in at Trial Bay Gaol. : Ancestral Patterns is a body of work exploring familial connections in time and place. As the screenwriter and actor John Huston says, 'You walk through a series of arches, so to speak, and then, presently, at the end of a corridor, a door opens and you see backward through time, and you feel the flow of time, and realize you are only part of a great nameless procession: With an ancestor detective in the family, we have been learning about the trials, tribulations, and successes of our forebearers. This has created a complex web of blood lineages, patterns that can be hidden just below the surface. These works honour the blessings and gifts that have been passed down.

A sculpture exhibition in a location like no other..

Sculpture in the Gaol takes place each year towards the end of winter, when the skies are clear, the days mild and the sunsets are sumptuous. It’s a perfect time of year to go camping beside the ocean, enjoy a relaxing café lunch and dose up on a bit of culture.

And you can do all three at Trial Bay Gaol, which boasts a gorgeous campground situated on one of the very few northwest-facing coves (hence the amazing sunsets!) on the NSW mid-North Coast. The panoramic view from the veranda of the Kiosk Restaurant takes in the bay and the imposing stone facade of Trial Bay Goal, which opened in 1886, after 13 years of construction by convict laborers.

The sculpture exhibition attracts entries from all over NSW, including many local schools from around the Macleay Valley. Works are exhibited in and around the gaol cells, which makes for a unique gallery experience, adding an extra artistic dimension to the fascinating stories conveyed via interpretation panels dotted throughout the precinct.
